Nitto Denko commits 39 billion yen to a foldable-adhesive plant that opens in fiscal 2028

Apple's iPhone Duo has pulled a row of Korean and Japanese component makers into the foldable supply chain, and the Toyohashi adhesive plant is the only piece of it carrying both a committed number and a date.

What happened

Why it matters

  • constraint Turning a 60% or 80% panel share into a revenue number takes an iPhone Duo unit forecast, and the report gives none, so the share estimates cannot be valued yet.

Omdia puts Samsung Display above 60% of foldable OLED revenue this year, and in the 80% range in the third quarter as Apple shipments build. That leaves every other panel maker in the category at about 20%, down from under 40% [14] [1].

The report carries no unit forecast for the iPhone Duo [4]. A share of an unstated volume does not convert into won. The same gap sits under Citi Research's estimate that LG Innotek handles 55% to 60% of camera volumes for the new iPhone lineup: the other 40% to 45% goes to suppliers the report leaves unnamed [15] [2].

The only committed cash here is Nitto Denko's, or rather the only cash with a date attached. The report is dated 11 September 2026 and the Toyohashi line in Aichi Prefecture begins operating in fiscal 2028, so the 39 billion yen goes out roughly two years ahead of the first sheet [3] [5] [3]. What it buys is an optically clear adhesive that has to keep both its grip and its transparency through hundreds of thousands of folds, which the report calls a technical hurdle that keeps barriers to entry high [4] [6]. The plant is aimed at foldable smartphones generally, not at the iPhone Duo [5].

The Japanese component base being tapped is old. Handset makers including NEC pushed thin, compact design in the early 2000s for garake feature phones, and component makers built high-density mounting and flexible printed circuit expertise that drew less attention once smartphones arrived [11]. JSR is developing insulating films with greater bending durability, and TDK is mass-producing higher energy density batteries for screens that draw more power [9] [10].

In ultra-thin glass the Japanese position is a challenger's. Corning and Schott lead that market, and Nippon Electric Glass is cultivating Chinese handset makers with products offering improved durability [7]. On the Korean side, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is cited as supplying the application-processor substrate and the MLCCs, and both Samsung Electronics and SK hynix sit in the memory supply chain [16] [17].

The tradeable content of all this is one capex line and two share estimates; the rest is development work and expectation. The counter-thesis is that a sole-source panel position at the opening of an Apple program is worth more than any capex figure, because it is a claim on whatever volume Apple eventually runs. Unnamed industry officials in Korea are the ones putting Samsung Display in that sole-supplier position [13]. A published Duo shipment forecast would settle which of the two readings is worth more.

What to watch

  • Whether Omdia's third-quarter print for Samsung Display lands in the 80% range or short of it.
  • Any second named supplier of foldable OLED panels for the iPhone Duo.
  • Whether Nitto Denko discloses how much of the Toyohashi adhesive capacity is contracted before fiscal 2028.
