Why it matters
The asymmetry between the two cues is the part worth sitting with. Day length on a given date does not change; ambient temperature does, and the researchers point to that difference as the route by which climate change can pull the two signals apart [11]. A warmer winter therefore does not move a bear's calendar wholesale. It moves one hand of the clock and leaves the other where it was.
That matters because the paper reports the two cues doing different jobs at different points. Temperature alone shaped behaviour at the onset of hibernation, while temperature and photoperiod together drove activity in the other stages examined [7], with the interaction showing up strongly around pre-hibernation feeding and den emergence [6]. Read plainly, the autumn end of the cycle is the end governed by the cue that is actually moving. Warming acts there first and without the light signal acting as a brake.
The consequence the authors name is a timing mismatch rather than a thermal one: bears active when forage is not yet available, and bears looking for calories where people keep them [10]. "As temperatures rise, bears may become more active during times when they would traditionally remain dormant," Holcombe wrote in the study [9].
The evidence base is deep rather than wide. The team worked from more than 22,000 hours of continuous video shot at Virginia Tech's Black Bear Research Center during Mesa-Cruz's earlier study [3], covering four wild, pregnant female bears across multiple stages of the cycle [4], with 45 distinct behaviours coded and matched to environmental and physiological variables [5]. That is roughly 5,500 hours per animal, on the order of 229 days of footage each [1] - enough to characterise an individual denning season in fine grain, and not enough to describe how males or non-reproductive females behave, since none were in the sample [4].
So the finding is a correction to a default assumption rather than a settled model. Hibernation timing in black bears has long been treated as mainly temperature-driven, and these results argue against that [8]; the study is also described as one of the first to test the two cues together [12], which is a statement about how thin the prior record was. What wildlife managers get out of it is an expectation with two variables in it instead of one thermometer rule, and stage-specific places to look for trouble [13].
