A team led by Patrick Randolph-Quinney, a biological anthropologist at Uppsala University, told the 25th European Paleopathology Association meeting in Berlin on Aug. 5 that the square holes punched through skulls from the Visby mass grave were made by a spiked club, not the lance head or arrow that the early 20th century excavators assumed [1][3][10]. The weapon identification is the headline; the method is the consequence, because fracture sequencing combined with motion capture turns a heap of unordered trauma into a claim about how many people were swinging and in what order [2][15].
The context is well documented. The battle was fought in July 1361 on the Swedish island of Gotland, where the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag set out to plunder Visby, then a wealthy Hanseatic League hub controlling trade between Western Europe and the Baltic [5]. Atterdag won against a roughly equal number of Gotlandic defenders, at a cost of 1,800 Gotlandic casualties to 300 Danish dead, a six-to-one ratio [6][7]. The dead were buried in their armour immediately after the fighting, in a mass grave near the battlefield that was first dug in the early 20th century [8].
The test rig is the part worth copying. The team built a body surrogate from cow bones under a thick layer of ballistic gelatine, a formulation engineered to stand in for human muscle, and topped it with replica medieval armour [11]. Ray Whitcher, a medieval reenactment expert, was put in a 4D motion-capture suit that records movement from multiple angles over time, handed replica weapons, and instructed to go "full-on berserker mode" [12]. Neither a crossbow nor an axe reproduced the damage seen in the Visby bone; according to Randolph-Quinney the spiked club caused immense damage and matched the grave injuries exactly [13]. The hypothesis that it was a club at all came from Ronja Bågling, an archaeology graduate student at Uppsala [14].
The group-combat inference follows from overlap, not from the weapon. Several skeletons carried multiple traumatic injuries, and the researchers say they could read which blow landed first and what made it [15]. On one skull, an axe wound is interrupted by a spiked-club impact, which requires more than one attacker [16]. Randolph-Quinney describes the pattern as teams: one man from the front, two from behind and the side, a large axe taking the legs out, then a dedicated individual delivering the coup de grace, they think with the spiked club [17]. That cuts against the conventional narrative he quotes, in which Visby's defenders were mostly poorly trained, poorly equipped boys and old men [9]. The ongoing project instead suggests the militias were not untrained peasants [18].
Two cautions. The work has not been through peer review, and what exists publicly is a conference presentation [3]. And "exactly matches" is doing heavy lifting for a comparison between medieval human skulls and cow bone under gelatine [11][13].
What to watch: whether the match survives publication with quantified fracture metrics rather than visual correspondence; whether the motion-capture kinematics are released so other labs can test axe-then-club sequences on their own assemblages; and what the project's ancient DNA and conflict archaeology strands say about the age and build of the defenders, since the collaboration includes both [10].
