Correlation spectroscopy

A frequency-comparison technique in which two atomic references are interrogated by the same laser so that shared laser phase noise cancels in the correlated signal, allowing interrogation times limited by the atoms.

A lutetium ion clock in Singapore reports the lowest uncertainty yet for an optical clock

Murray Barrett's group at Singapore's Centre for Quantum Technologies spent more than a decade on an element no other timekeeping lab uses, and now reports one part in 10^19 for a single lutetium ion clock. A redefinition of the second is expected in or after 2030.

Two lutetium ion clocks agree at 5.7 parts in 10^19 after 200 hours of averaging

Each 176Lu+ reference has an evaluated systematic uncertainty near 1 x 10^-19, and the direct comparison between them resolves any difference only to 5.7 x 10^-19, six times coarser than the budget under test.
