Passive samplers detected contaminants more often than grab bottles in a Pennsylvania creek

Grab bottles and passive in-stream samplers, run side by side for two growing seasons, produced records that disagree about where contamination concentrates and when it peaks. Penn State's team says a program needs both.

Reef water quality is improving, and the paddock cut is far bigger than the river cut

Up to 37 years of monitoring on seven Queensland river systems show nitrogen and sediment falling. Fertilizer use is down as much as 49 percent from its peak; the rivers moved a lot less.
