Apple opens the iPhone 18 line at the Pro tier, $100 above last year's Pro
Apple's new iPhone generation starts at the Pro, and the folding iPhone Duo ships five weeks after it. The floor price is higher this year, and anyone planning a device refresh now has to work around two separate handover dates.

What happened

Thirty-five days sit between the two halves of this launch, and 34 between the two preorder windows [1][2]. A refresh that includes the Duo needs two handover dates in the same quarter, and the second one lands after the September phones are already in users' hands.
The floor of the line rose because Apple no longer ships a standard iPhone 18 to hold that price point [2]. Wired reports both Pro models cost $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro series [6]. The cheapest way into this generation is now a Pro [5]. Order 100 of them and the increase by itself adds $10,000 to the invoice [6], before anyone picks a storage tier above the 256 GB base [11].
Teams tend to write the upgrade memo around new capability. Here the capability is shared. All three phones run the same A20 Pro chip, which Wired describes as around 20 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient than the last generation, with a new neural engine for on-device AI [9]. Every model ships Siri AI and Apple Intelligence [12], and the cover glass is the same Ceramic Shield 2 as the iPhone 17 range [17]. Money spent above the Pro price buys the second screen and the form factor. Apple does not publish a RAM figure, and Wired says every model is rumored to have 12 GB [10].
The Duo's outer screen is 5.4 inches and the inner one unfolds to 7.6 inches, which Wired says feels like an iPad Mini [13]. It weighs 254 grams and measures 11.3 mm folded, against 201 grams and 9.7 mm for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8: 53 grams and 1.6 mm more [14][3][4]. The inner display gets a nano-texture finish that Apple designed to cut glare and make the crease less visible [16]. The Duo also drops Face ID [15].
For a lot of fleets the honest answer is to buy nothing this cycle. Wired's advice to its own readers, before the model-by-model breakdown, is that "you probably don't need the latest iPhone" [7].
Two tests decide it. The first is whether the work in front of the user needs a screen that unfolds to 7.6 inches. The second is whether the rollout can absorb a date in late October rather than mid-September. If both are true, the Duo is worth planning the October window for. If only the second is true, the September Pro wave covers it at the new price. Otherwise the fleet keeps what it has. Apple still updates the iPhone 11 Pro [8].
