Rosetta support for Intel-only Mac apps ends two macOS releases from now

Apple's developer note dates macOS 27 as the last release that runs Intel-only apps on Apple silicon, so every unmaintained binary and every Intel-only plug-in on a Mac fleet needs a decision before macOS 28 ships.

Why it matters

Start with the audit. Apple documents two ways to find Intel-only code, and each of them misses something. In the Finder, Get Info reports a Kind of "Application (Intel)", "Application (Universal)" or "Application (Apple silicon)" [8]. In System Settings, General then About then Details next to Intel-based Apps produces a list, which Apple describes as showing "apps that you recently used or that are installed in common locations" [9]. An Intel-only helper that lives outside the Applications folder and runs on a schedule will not show up in that list.

The Kind field is also incomplete on Universal apps. Developers can expose an "Open using Rosetta" setting that forces a Universal binary to launch as Intel-based so it can use Intel-only plug-ins, extensions and other add-ons [10]. That app reports Universal to any inventory keyed on Kind. The dependency that breaks is the add-on, and Apple's guidance says components such as extensions and updaters may need to be updated separately, including add-ons from a different developer [11].

The carve-out is narrow. Rosetta does not vanish in macOS 28; the support page says its functionality "will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks" [6]. A dead vendor's Intel-only license manager or scanner utility on a finance workstation gets nothing out of that carve-out.

Dates. The developer post is dated September 1, 2026, calls macOS 27 the final release to support Rosetta, and tells developers to make sure their app runs "when macOS 27 ships this fall" [1][2][4]. macOS 28 is the next major release after that [6]. The cut therefore lands one major macOS release beyond the build shipping this fall [13]. Apple has not published a release date for macOS 28.

The two pages describe the same boundary from opposite sides, and the developer wording is the one that will start an argument in a change-approval meeting. It says Intel-only apps "will no longer run on Mac computers with Apple silicon after this update", meaning after macOS 27 [2]. The support page says Rosetta is available for any Apple silicon Mac using macOS 27 or earlier [5].

Holding machines on macOS 27 or earlier keeps Rosetta working [5]. It also means those machines stop taking major macOS releases. That is a security decision. The warnings have already started: on macOS 26.4 and later, users may get a system notification when they launch an app that relies on Rosetta [3], and the support page describes that notice as telling them the app or a component it uses will not work with macOS 28 [7]. From the same System Settings list, a user can pick Move to Trash [9]. An end user can remove a licensed, business-critical app from a managed Mac before IT has recorded that it was there.

Apple has been running this clock since 2020, when it introduced Apple silicon with Rosetta as a translation layer, and the developer post says the transition is now concluding as announced at WWDC last year [12].

What to watch

  • Whether Apple publishes a macOS 28 release date, or any enterprise deferral path for Rosetta.
  • Whether the games exception ever gets a documented list, since "certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks" is the only stated criterion.
  • Whether long-tail Mac vendors ship universal builds before macOS 27 ships this fall, or leave customers holding machines back.
