Microsoft reshuffles six Xbox studios in a 268-job reset

Microsoft cut 268 gaming jobs this week, laid off most of Halo Studios and moved Rare, World's Edge and Obsidian to new parents. Anyone planning around Game Pass or Xbox hardware now has to sort their commitments by what Microsoft has actually decided.

What happened

  • Microsoft cut 268 jobs across its gaming division this week as part of Xbox chief Asha Sharma's reset of the business.
  • Most of Halo Studios is being laid off, with a small team kept on to maintain Halo Infinite and the recently shipped Halo: Combat Evolved.
  • Rare and World's Edge, the Age of Empires studio, move under Activision, and World's Edge loses some staff in the move.
  • Obsidian leaves Xbox Game Studios for Bethesda Game Studios, where it will make a new Fallout game.
  • The cuts also reach the core business planning and management teams inside Xbox.

Why it matters

  • decision Sharma has told staff the platform is part of the reset. Any partner plan built on current Game Pass terms or Xbox hardware timing is a bet on a decision still being made.
  • exposure Partners whose deals ran through Xbox planning or management may find the people who negotiated them gone, with the terms handed to whoever inherits the file.
  • constraint Work with Rare or World's Edge now runs through Activision's structure, so contacts and approval chains agreed under Xbox Game Studios need confirming again.
  • precedent Microsoft ended a Halo game that one source told The Verge was years from shipping, so long-horizon projects are the type this reset has shown it will cancel.

Some Halo Studios employees spent hours this week waiting to find out whether they still had jobs. The first word came in a public Xbox blog post, and notices to staff followed through the morning [5]. "Promoted and laid off in the same week is pretty wild," said Josh Daniels, a former cinematic director at the studio [18].

Shannon Loftis spent nearly 30 years at Microsoft and ran World's Edge before she retired in 2022 [12]. She put the company's stated line and the staff experience into a single Threads post. "Super funny that Asha Sharma said 'clarity is kindness' to the WSJ last week then did a half layoff today," Loftis wrote [11].

For anyone outside Microsoft, the order of that morning is the practical detail. A publisher with a Game Pass deal, or an accessory maker timing a launch to Xbox hardware, should expect to hear about the next change from the public blog as well [5].

Six named studios were laid off, moved or merged this week [17]. Turn 10 and Playground Games, the Forza developers, are now one studio, a year after Microsoft gutted Turn 10 [8]. Sharma has called the program the "most significant restructure in Xbox history" [2]. It follows cuts of thousands of jobs that began in early 2024 [15]. Industry analyst Mat Piscatella was reacting to the planning and management cuts when he said, "These aren't cuts a serious business makes, in my opinion" [10].

The evidence on the platform side is thinner. The Verge describes Xbox hardware as under pressure and Game Pass as something that "keeps being reshaped" [13]. Its report does not tie either one to a specific change announced this week. The Verge also suggests some of the cuts could be meant to make Xbox easier to spin off, or to run as a wholly owned subsidiary the way Microsoft runs Activision and LinkedIn [14]. If that happened, the company on the other side of a partner's contract could change.

So the evidence for a moving platform is mostly the org chart. The partner's job is to separate what exists from what is planned. A simple grid does it. Put each dependency on two axes. One is whether the thing exists today with people maintaining it, or lives on a roadmap. The other is whether the team you deal with still has last month's parent company and managers.

Shipped and unchanged is the only box where planning can go on as usual. Shipped but moved covers work with studios now inside Activision or Bethesda, and the job there is confirming who owns the relationship. A roadmap item with an unchanged team needs its dates in writing. In my view, future Game Pass terms and Xbox hardware plans belong in the last box, roadmap with a changed team, given the cuts to Xbox's planning and management layers [9]. They stay out of next year's budget until Microsoft publishes them.

What to watch

  • Microsoft publishing new Game Pass pricing or partner terms, the first concrete sign of how the platform reset lands on outside publishers.
  • A Microsoft statement on Xbox hardware plans after this round of cuts.
