The Verge's reviewer has spent years living with home robots, and ahead of IFA's humanoid catwalk she argues the coordinating brain matters more than the body, after none of the humanoids at CES could open her laundry detergent.

The most concrete evidence in the piece is the reviewer's own inventory. After years of testing, her house has run on separate machines for sweeping and mopping, mowing the lawn, scooping cat litter and cooking dinner, and she has also hosted Amazon's Astro plus companion robots from Ecovacs, SwitchBot and Intuition Robotics [10]. Every one of those was bought for a single job. The account gives no retention numbers and no usage depth, which is worth saying plainly: what we have is one practitioner's years of first-hand testing, not a cohort.
That is why the remote assistance in Neo is the number to chase. The Verge says 1X has Neo in homes at $20,000, doing housework with a lot of help from off-site humans [1]. The write-up carries no figure for how much of the work that is, how often it happens, or how long it is meant to last [19]. And the detergent trial, the one unrehearsed task in the story, has no reported denominator either: the number of machines tried went unstated, the task was the same each time, and none of them managed it [17]. A rehearsed catwalk shows off choreography, not what the hands can do once the script runs out, and the detergent bottle is what tested that.
The physical case against the generalist body is dull and stubborn. Homes are messy, and most people have stairs, which means either flight or legs that can exert substantial force [8]. The reviewer's own framing is a 170-pound machine sharing a hallway with a dog [9], and she points at Ring's much-touted Always Home flying camera as shorthand for where the flying option went [16].
Her alternative is a coordinating brain rather than a body: software that dispatches the autonomous devices a household already owns, according to what the house and its occupants need [11]. Right now those homes mostly run on command-and-control, or on routines the owner wrote with triggers attached [12]. Tuya's Doova is the narrow version of the same idea, and what it declines to attempt is the interesting part. Its stated list is owner tracking, an emergency video call to family if nobody answers, conversational company and hub control over lights, curtains and kitchen and bathroom appliances [6]. Nothing there requires grasping an unfamiliar object or reaching a second floor [18]. The person it is for is a senior living alone, and the person buying it is probably their family [5]. There is no price and no date [7].
So the sorting test for anyone evaluating one of these machines: take the promised task list and put each item on two axes, whether it must manipulate an object the robot has not seen before, and whether it must change floors or bear weight. Tasks needing neither are shipping products today; tasks needing one are hard but scoped. Tasks needing both are research, and research in a living room arrives with a person on the other end of a connection. Then ask what the machine does while that person is offline. When the reported answer is that it simply waits, that tells you the $20,000 bought a body to cover for a brain that is not there yet.

Firsthand where she stood, vendor-fed everywhere else
Split the story in two and it grades very differently. The detergent challenge, the CLOiD demo, the years of mowers and litter bots — The Verge's reviewer saw all of that herself, and it is the sturdiest material here. Everything about machines she has not lived with is a company line relayed intact: Tuya on what Doova can do, LG on its 100,000 hours, and a $20,000 price plus "a lot of remote assistance" for Neo that arrive with no attribution at all.
What ships is vacuums; humanoids are still demos
Count the machines actually in houses and the list is short and unglamorous — the reviewer's own mops, mowers and companions. The humanoids are trade-show exhibits: Neo is in homes only with a human on the far end of the link, Doova has no price and no date, CLOiD is still practising in a Seoul warehouse, and Samsung's Ballie never made it out. One informal test on the CES floor produced zero successes.
Deflationary, and still slightly ahead of its proof
This is a corrective piece, and mostly a fair one — it punctures the catwalk with a detergent cap. But the two numbers doing the heaviest lifting are the two nobody measured: how much human help Neo needs, and how many robots failed the bottle. And the alternative it prefers has no shipped example either — Ballie died, CLOiD is in training, and the piece's own verdict on Alexa Plus and Gemini for Home is that no one is close. Confident conclusions, thinner instrumentation.

Note the timing. Tuya reveals a product with no price and no date the week buyers and press are in Berlin; LG announces a training facility the same week; half a dozen humanoids are booked to backflip down a runway. Those are announcements manufactured for a show, and they arrive in this story as their makers phrased them. The counterweight has an interest too: a reviewer whose authority is built on living with these devices is the natural author of the case that the flashy ones do not work, and she says so openly rather than hiding it.
One well-placed observer, nobody checking her
Where the reporting is eyewitness, trust it — she was on the floor with the bottle. Beyond that, this rests on a single publisher with no corroborating account, no reply from 1X about the humans behind Neo, and no vendor pushback on a piece that dismisses their category. Enough to act on the direction of travel, not enough to bank any specific figure in it.
