Two claims of different kinds are stacked in this Planetary Science Journal paper [3], and they are not equally secure. The carbon dioxide is a measurement: Webb recorded strong CO2 emission and found neither water vapour nor carbon monoxide [4]. The 1992 Saturn encounter is a reconstruction, an orbit run backwards to a more distant trajectory before the planet pulled the perihelion in toward Jupiter [5][6]. The bridge between the two is a mechanism the team proposes rather than sees: buried amorphous ice, porous and full of trapped gas, warms, converts to crystalline ice and releases CO2, which drags dust out through the nucleus [12]. The possible crystalline water ice grains in the coma support that at one remove, since crystalline ice implies the material has been heated or processed [8].
Framed as Saturn versus sunlight, the question dissolves. In Schambeau's own account, sunlight does the work, warming surface and subsurface layers until volatiles or trapped gases escape and lift dust [11]. Saturn supplied the delivery; the Sun supplied the heat. The observing record fits that division of labour, since the coma grew more visible between 2019 and 2024 as the distance from the sun fell [7]. What a single object cannot settle is the counterfactual, whether 450P would eventually have woken on its old orbit anyway. Testing that needs centaurs with and without recent giant-planet encounters compared at matched heliocentric distances, and the announcement says only that a small fraction of known centaurs are visibly active [13], with no count attached, so a reader cannot tell whether the active ones are one in twenty or one in two hundred.
The distance quoted, 4.8 billion km, is from Earth [1], which is not the quantity that governs sublimation. There is no perihelion distance in AU, no nucleus size and no CO2 production rate in the announcement [16]. The production rate is the absence I would most want filled, because it is what turns "active" into a mass loss rate and a lifetime for the outgassing.
One inconsistency in the write-up deserves naming. The phys.org text places the CO2 detection at a distance where ordinary water ice would vaporise efficiently [10], while Schambeau says the nucleus at that distance is too cold for water-ice sublimation to be the main activity source [9]. The missing water vapour [4] indicates which of the two readings is load-bearing: had water sublimation been powering the coma, water should have shown up in the spectrum.
The monitoring interval cited runs from 27 to 32 years after the encounter [15], so the published window watches the coma strengthen without recording what the object looked like beforehand. My read is that the CO2 detection is solid, the orbital history is likely, and the encounter-to-coma chain is the most economical explanation available for one member of a class already thought to be en route to becoming Jupiter-family comets [14]. That view is conditional on a population comparison nobody has run here.

Real paper, one retelling of it
A peer-reviewed Planetary Science Journal article with a DOI sits behind this, and the detections are stated concretely enough to be falsifiable — carbon dioxide there, water vapour and carbon monoxide not. But everything a reader can inspect arrives through one institutional account that quotes only the lead author and reports not a single measured quantity. Good provenance, almost no independent check.
Nothing beyond the discovery team
We are not going to manufacture an uptake figure for a five-week-old observing result. Nothing in this reporting shows another group observing 450P, citing the paper, or booking time on the object; the only activity on record is the team's own campaign.
'Awakening' outruns the measurements
The verbs do more work than the data permits — an ancient body awakening, a centaur becoming a comet — and the 1992 Saturn encounter is narrated as event history when it is a backward orbital reconstruction no reader can inspect. What keeps the gap modest is Schambeau himself, who hedges harder than the prose around him: 'possible' crystalline ice, a process the team 'thinks may explain' the activity.
A university describing its own faculty's work
Every affiliation named is UCF's, the only voice is UCF's lead author, and the shape — finding, quote, significance, publication details — is a press office's, carried onward without an outside astronomer added. That is normal science communication, not distortion. It does mean the framing choices belong to the party that benefits from them, which is exactly where the overstated verbs live.
Clear on what was claimed, not on whether it holds
We can say with some assurance what was asserted and by whom. We cannot corroborate any of it, settle the water-ice contradiction sitting inside the piece, or probe the Saturn reconstruction without the orbital elements. One publisher and zero numbers put a firm ceiling on this.
