Hue's head of technology says the capability was always in the bridge and the interface was the problem, so the company is letting an open-weight model write the rules while the Bridge Pro runs them locally.

The demo that tells you who this is for is the fiddly one: asking the system to program button 4 on a Hue dimmer switch to disable the dining room motion sensor [9]. It is somebody who got tired of the lights coming on every five minutes while the TV is on because the dog is pacing, and who was never going to find that setting by tapping through a switch configuration screen [9].
The comfortable internal story about an unused automation tab is that users do not want complex automations. George Yianni, Hue's head of technology, tells it the other way round: the bridge could always do this, and the company could not draw the interface for it [7]. Advanced users answered that by keeping their sophisticated automations somewhere other than the Hue app, which stayed at time-of-day basics [6].
The pitch is an AI assistant you talk to [1], but the thing being shipped is an automation engine with a written form. Hue designed a domain-specific language for the assistant to interact with [15], every resource the bridge knows about is addressable as both input and output, including light color, every button press, every sensor event and time [11], and the engine itself is going to third-party developers [10]. Prose is one client of that engine [4], which is the part that matters if you have to maintain what the prose produced.
The split between local and cloud sets the failure modes. Execution sits on the Bridge Pro, the assistant that writes the behaviors sits in the cloud [14]. Lose Hue's cloud and the behavior keeps running; what you lose is the ability to write or change it [2]. Back-up & Restore for bridge settings is promised for early next year [17], so the first months of these behaviors live on one piece of hardware with no vendor restore path [3]. The model choice runs on the same instinct: Hue built on the open-weight GLM family because, Yianni says, closed models sometimes change in the background and can significantly change how a use case behaves [16].
Before you rebuild anything, sort your existing rules on two axes: how often the rule changes, and who has to read it after you. Rules you edit every few weeks and own alone are what natural-language authoring is genuinely good at, including the awake-or-asleep case Hue demonstrated, which still needs a button press to tell the system which state you are in [8]. Rules a housemate or a future you has to understand belong wherever the program is legible, which for now means checking whether the app surfaces the generated language and whether developer access to the engine is real [10][15].
"This is not AI for the sake of AI; it's a practical application of the technology," Yianni said [13]. On button 4, that holds. On the parts of a house someone else has to maintain on Monday, the useful test is whether you can read back what you asked for.

Philips Hue's AI assistant can now build automations based on natural language, letting users describe what they want their lights to do; the feature is called Custom AI Behaviors and lets users orchestrate complex automations that were not previously achievable in the Hue app.
Custom AI Behaviors was announced at a press event at the IFA tech show.
Custom AI Behaviors are currently in beta and will roll out next month.
Users will be able to control Sonos speakers with select Hue switches, including the Hue Tap Dial Switch, to trigger Favorites, play or pause audio, adjust the volume, and move to the next or previous song in a playlist.
The Sonos control feature will be available via a software update in November.
Many advanced Hue users already have sophisticated automations to control their lights, but they did not set them up in the Hue app, which is fairly limited beyond basic automations based around time of day.

One briefing, unusually well quoted
Everything traces to a single reporter at Hue's own IFA event: on-the-record quotes from George Yianni, a demo she watched, and dates the company supplied. That is better than a press release — she saw button 4 rewired and says so when the flow is awkward — but the load of technical assertions here is heavy for one witness. The GLM choice, the local-execution claim and the developer-access promise are all company statements nobody outside the room has tested.
Nothing has shipped yet
There is no uptake to measure. The behaviors are in beta with a next-month date, Sonos control is a November promise, backup is early next year, and not one figure appears for beta participants, Bridge Pro installs, or developers building on the engine. A launch calendar is not adoption, and we will not turn one into the other.
Slightly ahead of the product
Hue pre-empts the eye-roll itself — "not AI for the sake of AI" — and The Verge declines to inflate: it flags the fiddliness and notes the power users this targets already automate their lights elsewhere. What still tips the balance is that "the capabilities are vast" describes an unshipped beta, and that the whole thing quietly requires the newest hub, a condition stated once and never weighed.
Vendor stage, newest-hub upsell
The venue was Hue's own IFA event, and the feature is locked to the Bridge Pro, so the news doubles as a reason to buy the latest hub. Yianni's open-weight rationale points the same way: controlling the model protects the consistency of the behavior Hue sells, and authoring still round-trips through Hue's cloud, so nothing about the choice loosens the company's grip on the feature. The Sonos tie-in adds a second party with a stake in more Hue switches on walls.
Checkable later, unchecked now
One publisher, one briefing, and three dates a firmware schedule can move. We are not lower because the specifics are the kind that come due in public: either the engine reaches third-party developers, or it does not; either behaviors survive on the Bridge Pro without cloud authoring, or someone notices when the cloud blinks. Until the rollout, read the timing and the developer-access promise as stated intentions.
