Tim Slate's description of the failure mode is more useful than the traffic jam that produced it. The robots themselves have been reliable, he told Business Insider; the harder task has been getting their software to talk to Nissan's material-flow system and the controllers that run production equipment [13]. That puts the schedule risk in a seam Nissan owns rather than in a machine it bought.
The AMRs come from OTTO, a Rockwell Automation company whose units also run at Ford, GE, Hershey and Caterpillar plants according to Rockwell's website [7], and the largest model carries roughly 4,190 pounds at about 4.5 mph [9]. The handshake into one plant's existing controls is not a catalogue item, which is why employees of Powerhouse Controls, the automation systems integrator, have been at Smyrna around the clock, sometimes seven days a week [14], and why forklift operators remain available to move parts whenever the automated system has a problem. "We can't have downtime," Slate said [15].
It is worth being precise about what is being automated. Forklift operators still bring racks of components from the truck docks to a deployment area; the AMR takes the last leg, driving under a rack, raising its platform about 2.5 inches and delivering the parts to a worker who loads them into a robotic cell [11]. The fleet coordinates with production equipment closely enough to skip a delivery to a cell that has stopped consuming parts, and to hand a stalled mission to another machine [12]. That is one segment of the flow, in one body shop [10], with five of the six phases still ahead [22].
Two robots arriving at the same coordinate was a bug, and it was found and fixed: Nissan worked with its software providers and corrected the programming [5], and JS Bolton's framing is that you hope everything works out of the box and it does not [4]. What carries forward is where the defect sat, in traffic management, the vendor's own competence, and that it still needed correcting on site. Phases two through six run against the same interface, and the published account does not say whether that work gets cheaper each time [24].
The board-deck version is tidy: 64 forklift and tug roles absorbed with no backfill of material-handling positions [16][18], and the plant's top cost-reduction line item this year [6]. It is incomplete in two respects. No dollar figure is attached to either the saving or the integration spend [24], and the headcount saving arrives on an attrition curve rather than at a switch, because the 64 workers stay employed at Nissan and bid for openings elsewhere in the plant, some with training for jobs involving industrial robots [17].
The labor sequencing is the more exposed decision. Slate notified both shifts about four months before the transition and told them they could start looking [19]; his account of the first reaction is that people heard only that their jobs were going, and some remain resistant [20]. Nissan says many of the destination roles suit upward mobility and may pay more [21]. The obligation to those 64 people was created on a four-month clock while the software clock is still running, so credibility with them now rides on phases two through six landing near schedule.

The Smyrna plant assembles the Rogue, Pathfinder, Murano and Infiniti QX60, and more vehicles are set to come to the factory next year.
At one point the software dispatched two AMRs to the same place at the same time, creating a traffic jam inside the plant.
JS Bolton, Nissan's senior director of manufacturing at the plant, said: "Of course you wish everything works perfect, out of the box. But, it doesn't."
Teams inside Nissan partnered with software providers and corrected the programming.
Tim Slate, the plant's director of body and stamping, said the project is Smyrna's largest cost-reduction initiative this year: "This is the top thing on the list."

The concrete details are unusually good for a factory story — 4,190 pounds, a 2.5-inch lift, 64 operators, four months' notice — and they come from named managers standing in the building. They also come from exactly one visit, arranged by the company, with no filing, contract, union voice or independent measurement anywhere behind them. Business Insider even reports the embarrassing part, the two robots sent to one spot, which is a mark in its favour; it is still Nissan's version of Nissan's rollout.
Live in one shop, on training wheels
Robots are hauling real racks to real welding cells, which is well past pilot theatre. But one of six phases is only now closing, the forklift lane stays staffed as insurance against downtime, and the integrator is billing seven-day weeks to keep it upright. Stamping and general assembly are still at the study stage. This is a working first increment, not a converted plant.
Headline leads with the muscle, the body carries the caveats
"Can haul 4,000 pounds — and call each other for backup" is the capability pitch; four paragraphs later the same story tells you the fleet once routed two machines into each other, that integration is the real work, and that forklift drivers are kept nearby because downtime is unacceptable. The overstatement is in the packaging and in Nissan's unquantified promise of lower labor costs and better-paying replacement jobs, not in the reporting itself.
A plant auditioning for its next vehicle program
Bolton says the quiet part aloud: a cheaper Smyrna could compete for additional production as automakers move work closer to American buyers. That gives every manager quoted here a reason to present the rollout as the plant's top cost win while it is still one phase deep. Rockwell also gets its OTTO fleet named beside Ford and Caterpillar at no cost, and the access that produced the piece came from Nissan.
Trust the mechanics, hold the outcomes loosely
What is happening on the floor today is described in enough operational detail, by people with their names on it, to take at face value. What happens next — 64 roles absorbed, labor costs down, workers landing better-paid jobs, five more phases delivered — rests on one company's forecast with no dates and no dollars, and no second newsroom has been near it.
