Federal Laboratory Consortium awards the three-year handoff of an Army-funded medic ultrasound

A handheld ultrasound guide built for Army medics has left MIT Lincoln Laboratory for a company staffed by engineers who designed it, and the Federal Laboratory Consortium is giving that handoff its 2026 transfer prize.

Why it matters

The device targets operator skill. The imaging hardware is a commercial handheld ultrasound; the custom part is software that helps the user get a guidewire and catheter into a blood vessel [3]. It is small and portable, so it can go into pre-hospital settings where the ultrasound machines usually found in hospitals cannot [4]. Military medics sometimes have to keep an injured soldier alive in the field for days before evacuation [6]. Lincoln Laboratory says AI-GUIDE lets medics with minimal specialized training deliver interventions that would otherwise be impossible outside a hospital, and that it drastically improves a patient's chances of survival [5].

Clinical testing at MGH proved the prototype's viability, according to the laboratory's account, and staff from Lincoln Laboratory and MGH then incorporated AutonomUS to commercialize it [8]. The announcement does not say how many patients were involved or whether the device has been cleared for market. For a device whose whole premise is the inexperienced user, it also gives no figures for how minimally trained operators performed against trained clinicians.

The award is for work accomplished in the process of transferring technology [1], and on that narrow measure the evidence is specific. A licensee exists, and the people who designed the prototype are inside it [8][15].

People moved with the technology. Nine Lincoln Laboratory team members are named on the winning team, seven current staff and two former [15][19]. One of the two, Matt Johnson, is now vice president of engineering at AutonomUS, and the other, Laura Brattain, is an associate professor at the University of Central Florida [15]. The MIT Technology Licensing Office, Lincoln Laboratory's technology transfer office and the Army's Combat Casualty Care Research Program supported the commercialization [16].

"The transition to AutonomUS underscores how strong partnerships can carry a technology from development into real-world adoption," said Asha Rajagopal, Lincoln Laboratory's chief technology transfer officer [12][18]. Samuel Kesner, the technical staff member who oversees the AI-GUIDE program at the laboratory, said the recognition "reflects the strength of the partnership among the Defense Health Agency, Lincoln Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, and AutonomUS Medical Technologies" [13][17].

AI-GUIDE has previously won a Lincoln Laboratory Best Invention Award and an R&D 100 Award [14].

What to watch

  • An FDA clearance decision for the vascular access device, which would turn the Breakthrough designation into a market pathway.
  • Published data from the MGH testing that separates minimally trained operators from experienced clinicians on the same task.
  • Whether the peripheral nerve block capability follows the same route out to AutonomUS or stays inside Lincoln Laboratory.
