LTTStore etches watts and data rate into both ends of its $22 USB-C cables
A cable line called TrueSpec puts power and transfer ratings on the connector where a user can read them, starting near $22 for C-to-C. The group behind USB-C already publishes documentation on how to label this way.

Why it matters

Two cables with the same connector can do different jobs because the USB-C standard permits it, and the outside of the cable does not say which is which. 9to5Google's Ben puts the floor at a cable that charges a phone at around 20W and carries no data at all, and the ceiling at one handling 12 times that power along with display output and 40Gbps of transfer [4][5]. Twelve times 20W is 240W [6].
That gap shows up when you are buying, and buying is the easier half. Ben's sharper complaint is about afterwards: get the right cable for charging a laptop at 100W and you still cannot pick it out of the dozen others in your bag [11]. TrueSpec answers that by etching the power and data ratings into either end of each cable [2]. The etched label only helps someone holding the end of the cable, so a cable already run behind a monitor is no easier to identify than before.
The line starts at about $22 for C-to-C and about $17 for A-to-C [3], and the premium buys a spec claim that holds and a way to check it without a meter. Ben calls the cables nothing fancy beyond the label [14], with thick rubber sheathing, and says they are bulky and heavy enough to annoy him in a backpack [9].
The engineering behind this is old. Per the review, labeled USB-C cables have existed before, earlier ones came with inconsistent labeling or a small lineup, and the organization behind USB-C publishes documentation on how to implement labels [7][12]. "It took way too long for someone to do this consistently," Ben wrote [8]. He also wrote that "this article isn't sponsored in any way, to be clear", and said LTTStore sent along its screwdriver and precision kit as well [10].
A drawer audit needs two numbers per cable: maximum watts and maximum data rate. If you cannot state both, file the cable as a charging cable until proven otherwise.
From there the choice is between labeling and uniformity. If every cable in the bag is rated for the hardest job you do, identification stops mattering and nothing needs printing on it. Mixed tiers exist to save money, so a printed rating earns its price only where you are deliberately keeping cheaper cables in circulation. For cables already in the drawer, testing each one and writing on it yourself produces the same information for free, slowly.
This line is for the person who is buying new cables anyway and is tired of reordering to find out what the last order could do.
What to watch
- Whether mainstream cable brands start applying the USB-C organization's labeling documentation to mid-priced cables, or leave it to specialty lines.
- Whether LTTStore widens the TrueSpec lineup or moves the C-to-C starting price below $22.
