Perplexity's Personal Computer feature now runs on Windows 10 and 11 for paying subscribers, and the ZDNet hands-on suggests its output is only as trustworthy as the person who can already check it.

ZDNet's reviewer pointed the agent at a OneDrive folder full of his own articles and got a five-page summary, shown in the chat window and offered as a downloadable Word document [13]. He could then say the details were correct, with no mistakes and no hallucinations, because he had written the source material himself [14]. That result was clean only because the reviewer already knew the source material by heart, which also makes it the least reusable check in the hands-on. A claims lead running the same instruction over 300 customer PDFs has no memory to check against, so the work moves from producing the summary to sampling it.
That is the useful frame for the paid-tier question. The paid tier is sold as multi-step work done with little or no interaction from you [19], but the review documented two read-and-write-a-document runs whose outputs a human read line by line. The agent's sharpest moment, spotting duplicates among the Downloads PDFs and accounting for them in the analysis [11], only registered as a success because the reviewer went looking for it.
The setup screens show where the friction sits, and it is not where you would want it. Local file access is one button on first launch, labelled "Enable local access" [6]. Each cloud service takes a trip to Customize, an Add Connector click, and a sign-in [7]; the OneDrive job needed Microsoft 365 wired up first [12]. So the broadest grant is the cheapest to make [18], and it gets made by whoever installed the app from the Microsoft Store or Perplexity's downloads page [3], which in most companies is not the person who owns the folder. The model picker sits in the same drawer, a long list with the advice to leave the default alone [8]. Reasonable advice, and it means your pilot notes will rarely record which model produced the bad answer.
Read the review as evidence and note its edges. Five tasks are advertised [17]; the text records outcomes for two and stops inside the third, where the instruction was to find unanswered mail from the past six months across all Outlook folders and draft replies [15], leaving three undocumented [16]. That third task is the boundary that matters, because reading files and saving a summary is not the same act as touching correspondence with your name on it.
That gap is a forcing function for the rollout. Score each candidate task on two axes: whether someone who already knows the answer looks at the output before it counts, and whether the agent writes or sends anything beyond your own machine. Read-only work with a knowledgeable reviewer is where these summaries earn the seat. Write-and-send work with no such reviewer is where Friday's questions come from. The awkward quadrant is read-only work nobody can verify, and there the honest move is to price the sampling before you book the time saved.

Perplexity's Personal Computer feature is built into its desktop apps and was previously available only for the Mac; it recently expanded to Windows, supporting both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
The only requirement beyond installing the app is a subscription to one of Perplexity's paid plans: Pro, Max, or Enterprise.
The latest Perplexity app for Windows can be obtained from the Perplexity Downloads page or the Microsoft Store.
Once installed, the Perplexity app can access local files, use any native application on the Windows computer, and connect to and work with files on cloud services such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, and Dropbox.
On first launch the Windows app asks whether the AI should work with local files; access is granted by clicking a button labelled "Enable local access."
Third-party connectors are added by selecting Customize in the left pane, clicking the name of a service, clicking Add Connector, then signing in to that service.

One desk, one machine
The setup half of this story is verifiable by anyone who installs the app; the results half is not. Every outcome comes from one reviewer narrating his own screen, and the single accuracy check in the piece only exists because he wrote the OneDrive articles the agent summarized. Nobody, including him, tells us whether the summary of the medical PDFs was actually right — which is the claim a reader would most want tested.
Shipped, uptake unknown
What is observable is a release and a paywall: the agent now runs on Windows 10 and 11, arrives via the Downloads page or Microsoft Store, and needs Pro, Max, or Enterprise. Beyond that the well is dry — no install counts, no company usage figures, no second organization anywhere in this reporting. Availability is standing in for adoption, and the two are not the same thing.
"Little or no interaction" does not survive the piece
ZDNet opens with the vendor's promise — describe the mission, walk away — and then documents a connector sign-in per cloud service, earlier builds that errored on any local-file request, drafted emails the reviewer copied into Outlook and rewrote himself, and a file converter stopped by blocked folders and failed writes. Four of five errands finished, so this is overstatement rather than fiction: the automation is real, the hands-off part is not.
Vendor's frame, tutorial's shape
The premise is borrowed: Perplexity has been touting Personal Computer, and the piece obliges with a download link, a store link, a reminder of which plans qualify, and a recommendation to keep the default model. That is the geometry of a helpful walkthrough rather than an adversarial test — the one hard failure surfaces because the software broke, not because the reviewer went looking for the edges. Worth noting too that the paid-tier requirement is stated as a fact and never questioned as value.
Firm on mechanics, soft on results
Take the buttons, the plans, and the platforms as solid — they are checkable and consistent. Everything downstream depends on one narrative thread that stops mid-sentence during the last task, and an early read of this same piece counted only two completed errands where four are in fact described. When the account of the story shifts as more of it comes into view, that is a signal about how much weight a single telling can bear.
