UKHSA says the larvae in east London have been destroyed and the public health threat is very low. This is the fourth UK detection of the species in recent years and the first with breeding, though a summer generation is not a population that overwinters.

The distinction worth holding onto is between a generation and a population. Larvae at a residential address mean eggs were laid there and developed there, which is a step beyond an adult arriving in the boot of a car. It is not evidence that the line survives to next spring. Jolyon Medlock of UKHSA put the ceiling on it himself: the UK climate is still too cold overall for long-term breeding, with the qualifier "for now" doing real work [8]. The same summer that plausibly allowed a generation to complete was the UK's hottest on record, with London among the hottest places in the country because cities amplify heatwaves [9].
Then there is the denominator. The find came through Mosquito Watch, the government scheme that asks people to report suspected invasive mosquitoes [3]. Passive reporting finds mosquitoes where somebody looked and filed something. So UKHSA's observation that no further mosquitoes or larvae have turned up in nearby public areas [5] is consistent with genuine absence and equally consistent with nobody having searched a nearby water butt. The thing this does not tell you is how many containers within a few hundred metres hold larvae right now.
Vector competence is also not transmission. Aedes aegypti can carry dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika [11], and UKHSA says there is no evidence the London mosquitoes have infected anyone [5]. Local transmission needs a person carrying virus in their blood to be bitten near the breeding site, then a second host bitten after the virus completes its cycle in the insect. That chain has been closing elsewhere in Europe: in late August, French authorities reported locally acquired dengue, West Nile and chikungunya cases in several parts of the country, including Paris [13]. West Nile virus was detected in the UK last year, in mosquitoes in Nottinghamshire rather than in people [15]. A study published earlier this year found the Asian tiger mosquito can transmit chikungunya across several months of the European year, which its authors attributed to the continent's rapid warming [14].
Count the record: four detections in recent years, one of them with breeding, so three arrivals that produced no recorded reproduction [2][19]. That is a short series, and it is a series generated by the same reporting scheme, not by a fixed trap network with a stable search effort, so year-to-year comparisons carry less than they look like they do.
Where the mosquito bites shapes who has to act. This species feeds at dusk and dawn, indoors and in shady spots [12], which puts the relevant habitat in gardens, yards and rooms rather than marshland. UKHSA says the larvae have been destroyed and the area will be monitored to remove anything that emerges [4]. Beyond that, control at a residential site depends on people emptying standing water on their own property, which is why the advice reported alongside the detection is about minimising breeding opportunities at home [18]. Cesar Lopez-Camacho of the University of Oxford, in a statement to the Science Media Centre, called the finding an early warning rather than an immediate public health threat [6]. On this evidence that is the right weight: the surveillance system did its job, and what it produced is one address, one summer, and no measurement yet of what happens after a cold month.

One agency's account, named but unchecked

A first-in-Britain dengue vector is the kind of finding that usually travels with more voltage than New Scientist gives it; the headline asks how worried to be and then answers with UKHSA's 'very low'. If anything is short-changed, it is the question the find genuinely raises, which is whether a generation that bred through a record-hot London summer can survive a winter. Medlock's two words, 'for now', carry that entire question, and the piece does not press him on it.
The body that found it also grades the risk
UKHSA supplies the detection, the containment claim and the risk rating, and the same story shows its public-reporting scheme doing exactly what it was set up to do. That alignment is not a reason to doubt the facts, but it is the reason a second source would be worth having. López-Camacho, speaking through the Science Media Centre, has no stake in the programme, and his 'early warning' phrasing lands close to the agency's own framing rather than against it.
