GPT-6 Astra lands in a different app depending on which ChatGPT plan you pay for
OpenAI started shipping the model on September 3 to Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts inside ChatGPT, while Plus subscribers have to open Work or Codex to find it, and Free and Go accounts are excluded.

What happened
- OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra on September 3, and says the rollout is gradual, so sitting on an eligible plan does not mean the model has reached the account yet.
- Inside regular ChatGPT the model is listed as GPT-6 Pro, and it is going to the $100 and $200 Pro plans plus Business and Enterprise accounts.
- Plus subscribers get Astra through ChatGPT Work and Codex instead of regular Chat, and Free and Go accounts are excluded for now.

Why it matters

The $200-a-month subscriber who opens the model picker hunting for the word "Astra" will not see it. In a regular ChatGPT conversation the entry sits under Pro as GPT-6 Pro, which is the model powered by Astra [4]. Plus subscribers see the name they expect, in a different app. Astra appears in Work on web and mobile, and on desktop you select ChatGPT and then switch from Chat to Work to reach it [5]. Codex offers it too, if the CLI is on version 0.153.0 or newer [6].
So the upgrade is a licensing question and a workflow question at the same time. A team sitting on Plus seats can pay for Pro, Business or Enterprise to get Astra where people already type [2], or it can move the work into Work and Codex [3]. The second route changes which app holds the history and the files.
The tiering buys throughput as well as access. At both ends of OpenAI's estimated range for local messages, the $200 tier gets 20 times what a Plus seat gets [1], and four times what the $100 Pro plan gets for twice the price [2]. Within each tier the estimate spans a factor of nine [3], because OpenAI says consumption depends on how complex the task is and how much context and reasoning it needs [10]. Chat is metered on its own clock. The $100 Pro plan gives GPT-6 Pro a 50-message weekly allowance shared with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, and the $200 plan allows 200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week [13]. That is four times the messages for twice the money [5], and on the cheaper plan every Sol Pro message reduces the Astra count.
On the API, past 272,000 input tokens in a request, the effective rate becomes $20 per million input tokens and $75 per million output [4]. A workflow that pastes a whole repository into context crosses that line without anyone deciding to.
Start with where the work happens. Which app do people already do this work in, and does the plan you already pay for deliver Astra to that app. When the answers name two different products, the cost of standardizing is retraining. During the rollout the answers can also differ between two colleagues on the same plan, because OpenAI says availability may vary between Chat, Work and Codex, with Work rolling out separately [9].
What to watch
- Whether OpenAI opens Astra to Plus inside regular Chat, or leaves Work as the Plus surface for good.
- Whether Free and Go accounts get any Astra access, and at what message limits.
- Whether Enterprise workspaces ship with the model permitted by default or off until an admin acts.
