The tray-photograph pairing is the part of this worth copying. A numbered card handed out at the end of the serving line ties one overhead shot of a loaded tray to a second shot taken at the bin, which turns a question people usually answer with a survey into an image somebody can score [1][2]. Three trained assistants scored the leftovers independently and then met to reconcile disagreements, converging to about 97 percent agreement by the study's later phase [9]. That figure describes the raters, not the students: agreement among scorers is what has to be established before any effect size is worth quoting.
The account never states the effect size [21]. UMaine reports that frozen smoothies at lunch raised the fruit students selected, raised the fruit they consumed, and cut waste sharply [3]. That is direction stated three times over, with no magnitudes attached. Whether the gain is a spoonful per student or half a cup decides whether a district buys blenders and pays somebody to run them. The account also does not describe a comparison condition [22], so novelty and the attention of visiting researchers remain live explanations for some share of the change.
The vote is the cheap part, and the part that travels. More than 400 students ranked options earlier research had floated, among them cafeteria murals, taste tests and a smoothie bar, and about 85 percent went for the smoothies [7], which puts roughly 340 students behind one option [8]. Jade McNamara, the human nutrition associate professor who directed the work, calls middle school an overlooked age group for nutrition programming and says adolescents "have strong opinions" [14]. The baseline gives them something to have opinions about: about a third of US adolescents eat whole fruit on a given day [11], leaving two in three who do not [13], and 20 to 40 percent of the fruit served through the National School Lunch Program is binned [12].
Mechanically, what the cameras caught looks less like refusal than friction. An apple came back with one bite out of it [4], and fruit was among the most wasted components of the meals studied [18]. Blending removes the work of eating it, and the obstacle then moves to paperwork: the team's findings are being used to press for changes to federal school meal rules that make regular smoothie service harder [6].
One thing is worth naming plainly. The funder, Wyman's, is a Maine family-owned food company founded in 1874 that came to UMaine with a stated mission of getting the world to eat more fruit [10], and the intervention students chose is the one built on frozen fruit. That alignment does not contaminate a photograph, which anyone can re-score, and it is a reason to want the scoring published rather than summarized. The thing this study does not tell you is whether fruit eaten at lunch adds to a student's day or displaces fruit they would have eaten at home; tray photography stops at the cafeteria door. I would pilot the protocol tomorrow, but I would hold off quoting a percentage from this one until the numbers show up in a paper.

Careful method, single unchecked account
The measurement described here is better than most cafeteria research: trays photographed at pickup and at the trash, three assistants scoring independently to roughly 97% agreement, two intervention schools against three comparisons. All of it reaches us through one phys.org write-up whose only speakers are the two UMaine researchers, with no journal, citation or outside reviewer named — and the setting is rural Maine middle schools, which is where the numbers stop being portable.
Five schools and an open toolkit
Two schools blended, three compared, and a free toolkit now sits online for anyone else. That is the entire footprint. No district outside the study is named as having picked the program up, and phys.org gives no downloads, requests or partner schools — so what has been demonstrated is availability, not uptake.
A Maine pilot dressed for national duty
The reporting is steadier than a smoothie headline implies, and our own summary of it undersold the study: the magnitudes are right there, 64% of standard fruit wasted against 14% of smoothie servings. The overreach points elsewhere — five schools in one rural state offered up as a program for schools everywhere, plus an unnamed federal rule-change effort with no proceeding attached to it.
A frozen-fruit funder, a university megaphone
The money came from Wyman's, a Maine company whose business is frozen fruit, and the finding is that frozen fruit blended into smoothies gets eaten. That does not make the tray photographs wrong, but funder product and study conclusion coincide precisely — and phys.org says outright that Wyman's approached UMaine. Add a university with a program to distribute and a telling that quotes nobody but its own investigators, and the promotional pull shows in the framing.
One telling, no second read
We can be fairly confident the study ran as described — the procedural detail is too specific to be loose — and moderately confident in the figures. What we cannot judge from a single institutional telling is whether the effect holds beyond two rural Maine cafeterias, how it looks after the novelty fades, or whether anyone has taken the toolkit off the shelf.
