Hitachi Energy's $528M Gallman plant starts making transformers in 2029

Hitachi Energy will spend $528 million on a Mississippi factory that more than doubles the state's transformer capacity. Production is scheduled for 2029, and the Crystal Springs plant keeps building units until then.

What happened

  • Hitachi Energy will spend $528 million on a new transformer manufacturing plant in Gallman, Mississippi, the company's largest single investment in the United States.
  • Construction is expected to begin late this year and production is scheduled to start in 2029, with Crystal Springs continuing to build units until Gallman is ready.
  • The project is the centerpiece of a roughly $1.5 billion US manufacturing expansion by Hitachi Energy, and more than 700 jobs are planned at the Mississippi operation.

Why it matters

  • constraint Gallman's first transformers arrive in 2029, so utilities and data centre developers planning grid connections in the next three years are still working with today's output.
  • decision Buyers negotiating multi-year supply agreements now have to ask which of the two Mississippi plants a quoted unit is allocated against, because the new capacity replaces the old and enlarges it.
  • exposure Once manufacturing leaves Crystal Springs, Mississippi output rests on a single site, and the customers waiting on that capacity absorb any slip in the transfer.
  • cost At roughly $754,000 of announced capital per planned job, the spend buys machinery and floor space. The payoff for Mississippi depends on units shipped, and the company has not published that number.

A developer with a 2027 in-service date can read this announcement twice and still be in the same queue. Gallman is scheduled to start production in 2029 [8]. Crystal Springs keeps manufacturing until the new site is ready [10].

Hitachi Energy plans to move transformer manufacturing from Crystal Springs to Gallman and keep the older site for warehousing, training and other support work [9]. So "more than double" describes what Mississippi builds once the move is done [17]. The new footprint will be more than twice the size of the existing factory, about 6.5 miles away [5][4].

Capacity here arrives as a multiple. The company did not disclose specifications for the plant's production machinery, and its announcement is built on the facility's size and the increase in manufacturing capacity [11]. With transformer lead times, a buyer works from a slot on a delivery schedule, and a multiple does not convert into one [14].

The $528 million at Gallman is the centerpiece of a roughly $1.5 billion US manufacturing expansion, so the single plant is about 35 percent of the program [1][12][15]. Set that against more than 700 planned jobs and it comes to roughly $754,000 of announced capital per job [3][16]. Interesting Engineering's account says both that more than 700 jobs will come with the project and that the project will more than double the local workforce with over 700 jobs planned at the expanded Mississippi operation, so the published account leaves net new headcount an open question [19].

The demand the plant is sized against, in the company's own framing, is data centers, industrial electrification, advanced manufacturing and grid modernization [13]. Those are all buyers who need voltage stepped up and down before a site can take power [18]. For all of them, Gallman's first units come in 2029 [8].

Put two dates side by side: the in-service date you have promised, and 2029. If yours lands first, this changes nothing in your supply plan, and your questions are about order position and allocation inside current Crystal Springs output [10]. If yours lands after, ask which plant your quoted unit is allocated against, because one of the two only starts producing in 2029 [8].

What to watch

  • Whether construction actually starts at Gallman late this year, since the 2029 production date is measured from it.
  • Whether Hitachi Energy publishes a unit or MVA figure for Gallman, which would let buyers convert 'more than double' into delivery slots.
  • Whether Crystal Springs output holds steady through the transfer or dips as lines move to Gallman.
