The third of four peer-reviewed monitoring reports says acid rain from historic sulfur dioxide made the rock more porous. Regulators beside a new World Heritage listing get an argument about dates.

A gradient is a statement about space, and the sites it points at have not moved. Proximity on its own cannot say whether the acid fell in 1985 or last month, so the weight of this year's conclusion rests on chemistry and on a timing argument.
The chemistry is settled ground. Sulfur dioxide converts to sulfuric acid in the atmosphere or on the rock itself, and that acid dissolves the manganese and iron oxides which give the rock varnish its dark colour; what it leaves behind is pore space [12]. The timing is where the real work happens. Sulfur dioxide emissions have fallen sharply since the 1980s, at Murujuga and globally, so the authors read the measured porosity as the residue of historic peaks rather than of anything a current stack contributes [13]. They apply the same logic to ammonia: experiments suggest it may influence chemical and biological processes on the surfaces, but the researchers say industrial ammonia emissions are too recent to explain a pattern this old [15].
Elimination by age is a legitimate method and also the softest joint in the report, and it sits against the program's own record. Nitrogen dioxide is the most abundant pollutant gas at Murujuga and was the earlier candidate, until last year's data could not separate its effects from those of sulfur dioxide [10]. Last year's finding was narrower too: raised porosity on surfaces near industrial areas, with a risk of fading or flaking if it continued [8]. Between the second report and the third, the named agent changed. The fourth and final report, due next year, is meant to establish how sulfur chemistry and microbial activity on the rock surface interact, an interaction the authors already believe was involved [14]. On the program's own schedule, that leaves one report to go [19].
The researchers are more careful than the fight around them will be. They say the work does not resolve every question, and that understanding a system as complex as Murujuga takes time [7]. They also name current air pollution as the thing they are asked about most [18]. The report carries more than 30 researchers, government funding and independent international peer review, and states that it was written solely by the researchers [6]. That last point is load-bearing rather than decorative. A peer-reviewed finding that points away from present-day operations, on a landscape spanning the Burrup Peninsula and the Dampier Archipelago that holds an estimated one to two million petroglyphs recording at least 50,000 years of Ngarda-Ngarli relationship to Country [1][2], will be quoted by parties who neither funded it nor wrote it. The test for each of them is whether they engage the dating argument or only the map.

The third annual peer-reviewed report of the Murujuga Rock Art Monitoring Program, a government-funded research effort, was released on the day of publication.
The research is undertaken by a team of more than 30 multidisciplinary researchers, independently peer reviewed by a range of international experts, and written solely by the researchers.

Large measurement base, single interested account
The underlying evidence base described is unusually large for this kind of question — 186,000 repeat surface measurements, continuous rainfall chemistry, peninsula-wide air monitoring and 5,500-plus lab tests — and the porosity gradient replicated on an expanded data set. But the cluster contains only the research team's own account of the report, the report and peer reviews are not supplied, and the article itself notes contrary findings from other researchers, so causal attribution is weaker than the descriptive measurement.
Program entrenched, regulatory uptake unshown
Adoption is real at the programme level: a government-funded monitoring effort now in its third of four annual reporting cycles, with a disclosed instrument and sampling footprint across the peninsula, operating beside a July 2025 World Heritage listing. What the cluster does not show is any regulator, industry operator or Traditional Owner body acting on the third report's attribution, and the long-term environmental criteria are explicitly still being written, so uptake of the finding itself is unevidenced.
Modestly ahead of a still-open record
The framing is comparatively disciplined for a self-authored release: the authors hedge with 'likely', state the work does not resolve every question, and concede monitoring cannot prove the absence of small effects. The overstatement is structural rather than rhetorical — a headline-level exoneration of current emissions drawn from the third of four reports, before the microbial interaction is resolved and before ammonia and ozone criteria are complete, with dissenting research acknowledged but never characterised.
Funded, self-authored, industry-adjacent finding
Disclosed incentive load is material: a government-funded monitoring programme publishes, through its own researchers and with no external voice in the cluster, a finding that shifts blame from present-day industrial emissions beside a newly listed World Heritage landscape to emission peaks that ended decades ago. The programme also authored the air quality thresholds against which it judges current pollution compliant. Mitigating factors are the disclosure of funding and sole authorship, the stated independent international peer review, and explicit acknowledgement of contrary studies.
One publisher, one interested author
Confidence is capped by cluster structure rather than by the quality of the work described. Every claim traces to a single phys.org item written by the programme's own researchers; the report, its peer reviews and the differing studies are not available for checking, and no regulator, operator or Traditional Owner response is present. Descriptive claims about measurement volume and the porosity gradient are internally consistent and specific, which keeps confidence at mid range rather than lower.
