DOE hands Natura the same FLiBe salt formulation that cooled the 1960s MSRE experiment
Natura Resources says it now holds the coolant for its MSR-1 demonstration reactor, shipped from Oak Ridge through Idaho National Laboratory to the Abilene Christian University site on September 18. It won the material in a DOE competition.

What happened

Why it matters

The coolant reached Abilene before the building it goes into is finished. Workers are still putting up the test facility, and the material that has to circulate through it is already in Texas [2].
Natura says the batch is FLiBe with lithium enriched to 99.99% lithium-7, a specification the company ties to minimizing tritium generation in the salt [6]. Taking possession, in the company's telling, resolved a major supply-chain challenge and gave it an essential material needed to operate the facility [4]. Interesting Engineering's account does not include the quantity delivered or what Natura paid, so a reader cannot tell whether MSR-1's loop inventory is now complete.
More than 13,000 hours, against 8,760 hours in a year, is roughly a year and a half of running, accumulated across a program that ran from 1965 to 1969 [7][15]. That experiment is the technical baseline Natura says it is designing against [8].
Jordan Robison, CEO of Natura Resources, said: "Receiving this salt from the DOE is a handoff between generations of American innovation" [9]. He also said the company is "carrying that legacy forward and turning it into a commercial reality that will deliver reliable energy, clean water, and medical isotopes to the world" [10]. The commercial version he is describing is a fleet of small liquid-fueled modules supplying industrial sites, remote communities and critical infrastructure, with medical isotopes and clean water production alongside the power [12]. What is under construction is one demonstration loop on a university campus, and its product is operating data Natura will use to design and license the later systems [11].
July's safety design agreement is what makes the salt useful on a schedule. DOE's approval established the legal groundwork for federal authorities to approve construction and authorize system testing [14].
For anyone holding a plan with one scarce input, substitutability and possession are two separate exposures. Substitutable plus a promise is a purchasing problem, and a later date with more money usually closes it. Non-substitutable plus a promise is the case with no recovery path, because there is no second seller to pay more. Natura now holds the material itself: the salt is on site, and the remaining exposure is construction and authorization [4][14] at a facility that is not built yet [2].
