Apple opens iOS 27 to iPhones as old as the 11

The finished build is out after a July beta, but on older handsets it is an opt-in that needs just under 23GB free. Apple is also offering iOS 26.7 on the same update screen, so support teams have two current versions to track.

What happened

  • T3 reports that Apple has released the finished build of iOS 27 for the iPhone, ending a public beta that had been running since July.
  • The update installs on any iPhone 11 or later, including the second-generation SE, which T3 says covers handsets up to seven years old.
  • According to T3, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max go on sale on Friday 18 September with iOS 27 already on them.
  • Owners of existing phones get it by opening Settings, General, Software Update and accepting the upgrade, which T3 says is the route for older handsets for now.
  • That screen may list an iOS 26.7 upgrade above iOS 27, and T3 says users can take iOS 27 directly without installing 26.7 first.

Why it matters

  • constraint Adoption on older handsets is paced by whoever owns the phone, since someone has to open Settings and free up the space, so this month's version mix in your analytics records who chose to update.
  • decision With two current versions offered on the same screen, the first question in a bug report changes from whether the user is on the latest iOS to which of the two they took.
  • exposure Apple's assistant is now acting inside messaging and phone calls, so booking and to-do apps share the moment of intent with a suggestion their teams do not control.
  • contradiction T3 names the iPhone 18 Pro as shipping with iOS 27 while its own compatibility list stops at the iPhone 17 Pro Max, so the model names in that account need checking against Apple before they go into a support matrix.

This has to install on an iPhone that may be seven years old, and the download is just under 23GB [3][7]. T3's advice to that reader is to back up to iCloud or a computer first and run the update on wifi with the phone plugged in, because the download will take a long time over a data connection [16].

The feature T3 leads with is the new Siri AI, which it describes as integrated into every part of iOS 27 and giving contextual responses and suggestions [9]. Siri also has its own app now, where past conversations can be reviewed and picked up again later [10]. In messaging it offers quick actions, such as setting a reminder or a calendar event for something the user is planning [11]. On a call to a hotel or an airline, T3 says it can bring up booking references from email [12].

Those last two describe work that apps currently do. A confirmation number sitting in Mail, or a reminder a to-do app wanted to create, is now offered at the moment of intent, one layer above any app. A team that counts its funnel from app open sees only the version of that task that reaches the app.

The rest of the release, per T3: extend and reframe in photo editing, improved image cleanup, an expanded Image Playground, a refresh of Liquid Glass, and stronger child safety controls over what children can access [13][14][15].

T3's compatibility list runs to 30 model entries, topping out at the iPhone 17 Pro Max and reaching back to the iPhone 11 and the second-generation SE [17]. One version number covers all 30. The article does not say which of the Siri AI features work on the oldest of them [19].

So whether a given phone can do a given thing turns on the model. Settling it takes a support matrix with a device column beside the OS column, and the team keeping that matrix will spend the next few weeks explaining features that were never on the handset in front of the user.

What to watch

  • Whether Apple starts pushing iOS 27 automatically to older phones instead of waiting for owners to accept it in Settings.
  • How long iOS 26.7 stays on the update screen beside iOS 27, and how the split shows up in app analytics.
  • Whether Apple publishes which Siri AI features need silicon newer than the iPhone 11's.
