Google stakes the Googlebook on three features that need an Android phone on the other end
Continue On, the Files app and Cast My Apps are what a Googlebook has that an ordinary laptop does not, and all three of them reach into an Android phone. That dependency decides who should buy one.

What happened
- Three named features link the laptops to Android phones: Continue On, a Files app that reaches the phone's storage, and Cast My Apps.
- Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem at Google, said the Android community focus and seamless flow between devices were the primary motivation, and called the line "a new category of laptops built for how people work today."
- The line is built from aluminium, magnesium alloy and carbon fibre with haptic glass trackpads and touchscreens up to 2.8K OLED, which Google positions above Chromebooks.

Why it matters
- cost Standardising a fleet on the continuity pitch mostly means buying $1299 machines, and the Android phone that switches those features on sits on somebody else's purchase order.
- constraint An iPhone owner gets the touchscreen and the Gemini tools and none of the handoff, so the buyer list narrows to Android households and Android-issued fleets.
- exposure A laptop that can browse a phone's files and mirror its apps forces BYOD policy to say whether a personal handset may pair with a company machine at all.
- decision The bundled year of Google AI Pro makes the software free at rollout and a budget line twelve months later, in front of the same approver.
Open the lid and the document from the train is on screen already. Google says Continue On connects a phone and a Googlebook so a project started on the go can be picked up as soon as the laptop opens [4]. Cast My Apps runs the other direction, putting the phone's apps into a window on the desktop [6]. All three phone features are defined by what the handset holds, so a user carrying an iPhone gets nothing out of any of them [23]. Android Police framed the line as the answer for Android owners who envy friends moving between an iPhone and a MacBook [7].
The price list sorts out who this is for. Acer's convertible, the only one in the group, starts at $899 [15]. The Dell XPS Googlebook starts at $1199 with a Snapdragon X and a 13.4-inch 2.5K LCD [16]. Asus's 14, Lenovo's 15 and HP's 14 each start at $1299 [17][18][19]. Three of the five models therefore open at the top of a $400 band [21][22].
Two columns will do for the rollout plan. One holds the features that need a paired Android phone. The other holds what the laptop does on its own: Gemini through the Magic Pointer, which comes up when the cursor wiggles and can act on what is on screen [9]; Rambler, the dictation that follows a mid-sentence language switch and takes out the umms and ahhs [10]; and Create My Widget, which builds a widget from a plain-language description [11]. I would price the machine against the second column and treat the first as upside, and the cost of that caution is that you undersell the one thing this hardware does that a cheaper laptop cannot, if your users really are all on Android.
Then decide in advance what would count as working. The number to watch is the share of laptop sessions that resume a file last touched on the phone, and whether that share still holds in week three.
Google said Gemini and other AI features like the Magic Pointer do not act on Googlebooks without permission [12]. Every Googlebook also includes a full year of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools [13]. Google has not said what the price is after that year [25].
Samat told Android Police he has primarily been using the Dell [20]. The other four models all ship a 2.8K OLED screen [24].
What to watch
- Whether Google ships an admin control for pairing a personal Android phone to a managed Googlebook.
- Whether Continue On works with third-party Android apps or only Google's own.
- Whether a later wave of Googlebooks lands below the $899 Acer.
