Google Ads' shortest queries convert at more than twice their impression share

A query-length dataset running to August 2026 has 1-2 word searches down to 24% of impressions while still holding 52% of conversions, and its two shortest buckets already account for 98% of the conversion total.

Why it matters

Divide each bucket's conversion share by its impression share and the short queries lead in both snapshots. In January 2025, 1-2 word searches had 42% of impressions and roughly 62% of conversions [1][3], or 1.48 points of conversion share per point of impression share [1]. In August 2026 the same bucket had 24% and 52%, which is 2.17 [1][3][2]. The 3-4 word bucket moved from 0.61 to 0.96 [3][4]. By the end of the period it was converting at 44% of the short bucket's rate [5].

Growth and efficiency point in different directions here. The 3-4 word bucket added 26 points of conversion share against 15 points of impression share [10], so its conversions grew faster than its traffic. In levels it has only reached parity with its own volume.

The conversion column does not close. Take 52% and 46% as shares of one total and 2 points are left for every query of five words or more [6]. Those same buckets held 82 points in January 2025, leaving 18 [7]. On those figures the 5+ word groups lost 16 points of conversion share [8], while the write-up says queries of 5-6 words and of seven or more also increased their conversion shares, from much smaller starting points [5]. The impression shares do sum: 75 points in the two short buckets at the start, 72 at the end, so the long residual grows from 25 to 28 [9].

Settle that discrepancy before rebuilding the split in an account. Either the four buckets are not exhaustive, or the conversion percentages come from different totals, or the "roughly 62%" starting figure is loose enough to move the residual.

The write-up places the change in the context of Google's AI Mode and Gemini and calls it a sustained change [8]. For the shares to transfer to another account, that account's mix of branded and generic terms would have to resemble the sample in the dataset Tabeling examined, and the write-up does not describe that sample.

Its example is "accounting software" against "accounting software for construction contractors", where the second searcher has supplied more context about the product fit they need [12]. It also says the data does not prove that every longer query is more valuable, and argues instead for evaluating those terms separately from generic traffic [13].

The measurement step holds whether or not the shares reconcile. Group search terms by word count into 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7+, then compare impression volume, clicks, conversions, cost and the conversion metrics the business already uses across the four groups, before any major budget decision [9]. On money, the write-up says bidding and budgets should follow validated performance, not a blanket assumption that long-tail traffic always converts better [10], and that low-volume long groups may warrant controlled testing instead of immediate large-scale spend [14]. It treats query length as a planning input that does not replace normal performance evaluation [11].

What to watch

  • Whether Tabeling or Search Engine Land publishes the bucket definitions and conversion totals that would reconcile the 98% figure.
  • Whether a second dataset from a different agency shows the same 15-point impression gain in 3-4 word queries.
  • Whether the 5-6 and 7+ word groups gain enough conversion volume to be measured on their own rather than as a residual.
