A flat altcoin gained 22% against Bitcoin in the month Glassnode's signal hit 86

Glassnode's Altcoin Cycle Signal hit 86 on June 22, well above the 50 line, after Bitcoin fell roughly 18% in a month. The firm's July update claimed strength in absolute terms, and September's flagged almost no leverage.

What happened

  • Glassnode's Altcoin Cycle Signal climbed to 86 on June 22, clearing the 50-point line that separates Bitcoin dominance from altcoin outperformance.
  • A meaningful part of that reading came from Bitcoin falling roughly 18% in the month before it, according to Cryptobriefing, and not from a surge of altcoin demand.
  • By mid-September Glassnode was pointing to an absence of leverage, with altcoin open interest still substantially below Bitcoin's levels.

Why it matters

  • constraint A relative signal cannot tell an allocator that money arrived, because the same 86 print appears whether altcoins climb or Bitcoin simply drops 18%.
  • contradiction With two providers labelling the same September market differently, an allocator has to choose which basket and which lookback window to trust before using either number.
  • exposure Anyone sizing a position off the 86 reading is exposed to Bitcoin's next move, since a Bitcoin recovery can push the signal under 50 while altcoin dollar values hold.

Run the June print backwards. An altcoin that did nothing at all in dollar terms gained about 22% against Bitcoin over a month in which Bitcoin fell 18%, because one divided by 0.82 is 1.22 [14]. Glassnode said much the same in its own words. The firm flagged that the move was driven significantly by Bitcoin's pullback and not by explosive, independent demand for altcoins [4], and it described altcoins as having "run out of sellers" after nearly two years of sustained downward pressure, according to Cryptobriefing [5].

A market with no sellers left can rise on very little buying. That is a weaker claim than capital arriving. The July 4 update is where Glassnode made the stronger one, keeping the signal in altcoin season territory with what the firm characterised as genuine strength on both a relative and an absolute basis [6]. Cryptobriefing described that as a capital-expansion dynamic beginning to take hold [13].

Then the September data arrived. Total altcoin market capitalisation was up roughly 21% month over month by mid-September [7], which is an absolute figure and not a ratio. Cryptobriefing gave that percentage without a dollar figure for the market cap. The caution had moved to the financing side. Altcoin open interest stayed substantially below Bitcoin's, meaning traders were not borrowing aggressively to amplify their positions [8], and the crowd of momentum traders who typically pile in mid-cycle had not shown up [12].

The vendors also stopped agreeing. Glassnode's 86 sat 36 points above its own 50 line [15], while CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index was around 45 in September, technically still in Bitcoin-dominance territory [9]. The two are constructed differently, track different baskets of assets and weight performance over different time windows [10]. Cryptobriefing wrote that two reputable analytics providers were looking at the same market and arriving at different conclusions [11].

In my view the June reading is a statement about Bitcoin's month. A ratio with a falling denominator moves whether or not anyone buys the numerator [2]. The counter-thesis is Glassnode's own July revision, and it is serious: relative and absolute strength together, then a 21% month, is what the early part of a rotation looks like. The thin leverage says the position is not yet crowded. Altcoin dollar market cap could keep climbing through a Bitcoin recovery while the Glassnode signal slides back under 50 at the same time. That would show the dollars moved and the ratio simply stopped describing it, and Cryptobriefing named that exact possibility [16].

What to watch

  • Altcoin open interest closing the gap to Bitcoin's, which would mark the leveraged crowd arriving.
  • CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index moving out of Bitcoin-dominance territory and ending the vendor split.
  • Glassnode's next update, and whether it repeats July's claim of strength on an absolute basis.
