A Congo Basin survey makes a methods argument more than a discovery one. Vertical position is a habitat axis. The team held location and clock fixed while varying only height. That design is what makes the axis measurable.

The design is what makes the height numbers mean anything. At each point the team ran three cameras at once, one facing the ground, one a few metres higher in a tangle of vines, and one 20 to 30 metres up in a tree crown, all watching the same column of forest simultaneously, in lead author Daniel Alempijevic's description [9]. The alternative, ground cameras in one set of places and canopy cameras in another, would tangle height up with location. Here the spot and the sampling window are held fixed, so the only thing changing between the three records is how far off the ground the lens sits.
The arithmetic on the strata is where the survey-methods argument lives. Ground cameras logged 32 of the 47 taxa [4], which sounds like most of the community until you subtract: 15 taxa, close to a third of the total, never appeared in front of a ground camera [16]. The three per-stratum counts also add up to 77, thirty more than the number of taxa recorded [17], so multi-layer use is the rule here rather than a curiosity worth a figure caption.
The understory result is the one I would carry into a survey-design meeting. A quarter of the arboreal mammals preferred the understory over the crown [6], which means the middle camera is not a redundant copy of the high one in forest laced with vines.
The thing this does not tell you is effort. The Florida Atlantic University summary gives no station count, no camera-nights and no survey duration [21], and without a denominator 47 taxa cannot be set against a richness figure from anywhere else. The unit is taxa rather than species, and the material does not say how many were resolved to a species name [22]. The companion occupancy model in Ecology, meanwhile, is built on the 25 most-detected species [14], roughly half the taxa recorded [18], which is the half where the data is thickest and not the half a ground grid misses.
White-bellied pangolins used the canopy more often in mature forest and were detected closer to the ground where land had been cleared for agriculture, a pattern the authors note could raise their exposure to poaching by putting them near people more often [13]; pangolins are already among the most trafficked mammals on earth [20]. That is a comparison across forest types, not animals watched descending, and cleared land also has fewer tall crowns for a camera 25 metres up to observe.
The bycatch is its own argument for the column. More than 1,500 bird events came off the same cameras, including raptors taking mammals and eastern long-tailed hornbills trailing monkey groups [12], along with small insect-eating bats repeatedly approaching other mammals, possibly hunting the insects those animals attract [19]. Thousands of videos went to researchers and trained volunteers for identification, which is the hidden labour line in any camera study [8].
The undercount is not a correction factor you can carry elsewhere. Fifteen taxa is Lomami's number under Lomami's canopy structure [16], across three survey areas in one park [2], and a drier or shorter forest would produce a different one.

Florida Atlantic University researchers and collaborators used infrared cameras from the forest floor to the canopy to create a 3D view of biodiversity in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Lomami National Park, revealing which mammals share the forest and how they use that 3D space.
The first study, published in the Journal of Mammalogy, developed the method to examine species richness, community composition and vertical habitat use across three survey areas in Lomami National Park and its buffer zone.
Researchers identified 47 mammal taxa, representing primates, carnivores, rodents, artiodactyls (even-toed hoofed mammals such as red river hogs) and pangolins.
The cameras detected 32 taxa on the ground, 23 in the understory and 22 in the canopy; ground cameras captured most mammal diversity but missed many arboreal species.
25% of arboreal mammals preferred the understory, highlighting the value of surveying the lower-mid-forest strata in complex forests tangled with vines.
Eight species were detected outside their currently documented geographic ranges, providing records that could help inform future range assessments.

Two peer-reviewed papers, one publisher, no effort data
Every figure a reader is asked to trust — 47 taxa, the 32/23/22 split, eight out-of-range species, 1,500-plus bird events — reaches us through Florida Atlantic University's own announcement, reproduced by Phys.org. The ballast is real: the method sits in the Journal of Mammalogy and the occupancy analysis in Ecology, so specialists have looked. The hole is equally real: without camera stations, camera-nights or a survey window, nobody outside the project can tell whether 47 taxa reflects a dense multi-year effort or a thin one, and the 47 is never split into species-level identifications.
One park, one group, two papers
The camera column has been used where it was invented and nowhere else that this reporting can show: three survey areas inside Lomami and its buffer zone, one research group, two publications drawing on the same footage. Thousands of videos and a volunteer review pipeline suggest the workflow is more than a pilot, but no other team is described picking the method up, and the absence of any station or camera-night count means even this deployment's size is asserted rather than shown.
Restrained prose, unchecked firsts
For a university release this is unusually disciplined — 'probably the first camera-trap recording' keeps its hedge, and the bat behaviour is offered as a possibility. The overreach sits in two places. The claim of the first survey to capture three pangolin species is stated flatly on one researcher's authority, and the poaching argument slides from a detection-height difference to a risk to animals without anything measuring harm. The methods case, by contrast, is if anything undersold: the elevation result across 43 metres is the most quietly striking thing in the story and gets the least room.
University release, wire-style republication
Follow the text's route and the shape of its selection becomes obvious: an institution announcing that its own alumnus and postdoc published, carried by an outlet whose business is moving institutional announcements to a general audience. Nothing is concealed and the science is peer-reviewed, but the choice of what to include belongs to the promoter — the firsts and the charismatic species are quoted at length, while the survey effort that a sceptical ecologist would ask for first is simply absent, and no competing account exists to supply it.
Solid science, thin sourcing
We are confident about what was said and reasonably confident it is true: the figures are specific, mutually consistent, and backed by two journal papers. We are not confident about magnitude or standing. A single publisher relaying a single institution, with no effort data and no outside check on the firsts, is enough to report and not enough to settle.
