Loudness, complexity and variation in the birdsong itself did not decide whether listeners felt restored; every natural soundscape in the set delivered a wellbeing benefit [4]. A vegetation belt needs width, which means land at the park edge, and it needs years to grow. A speed limit needs a traffic order and signs, and it works from the day it takes effect. Neither is priced in this work, but only one of them competes with the park for space.
The perception result cuts the same way. All the soundscapes contained three bird species and five individual bird sounds, yet participants who perceived greater species diversity reported greater wellbeing [8]. Nothing about the birds varied, so the variance sits in what listeners thought they heard [12]. The gain did not require more species, only the impression of more.
Younger participants also reported greater wellbeing than older ones, which the researchers tentatively link to hearing [10]. Taken with the rest, the measured benefit depends on the listener as much as the site, and a single acoustic target for a park will not serve everyone in it equally. All of this was simulated soundscapes under test conditions [2][3], which ranks the interventions without sizing them.
