Crisis adviser credits Ed Sheeran's onstage apology with reviving his standing among fans after Kraft's veto

Sheeran's first answer put the decision in the deal paperwork ^[4], although the leverage lay with a venue owner who could take a stadium date away ^[2]. People blamed Sheeran and called for boycotts, and resale prices for his coming shows fell ^[5]. Tara Goodwin, founder of Goodwin Consulting, called the Instagram post "impersonal," "callous," and "incredibly defensive" ^[10].

Sheeran had to weigh one partner against one date, and perhaps more dates, because Kraft also encouraged other US stadium owners to follow his lead ^[3]. Going along with Kraft kept Gillette Stadium on the calendar. It also cost Sheeran the rest of his openers, who quit in solidarity with Macklemore and the Palestinian people ^[5]. In Philadelphia he moved his set time up to fill the empty slot and played the hits as planned ^[9].

In his second statement Sheeran talked about his own choices. "I've had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I'm so so sorry," Sheeran told the crowd at Lincoln Financial Field before he sang ^[7]. He presented carrying on as a promise kept. "Honoring my commitment to my fans is also completely essential to who I am, and that is why I'm here tonight on my own and continuing my current tour," he said ^[8]. According to Goodwin, the speech was more specific and more emotional than the post, and both helped win fans over. In it he condemned the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023 ^[12]. She said it helped revive his reputation with the merch-buying, ticket-holding fans who matter most to his income ^[11].

Randy Nichols, an artist manager at Fly South Music Group, gave a different explanation, one that is about money. Some had speculated Sheeran might cancel the whole tour ^[6]. "This is a huge issue that he needs to navigate, but you're talking about hundreds of millions of dollars earned over the course of an entire tour," Nichols said. "You're not going to cancel that tour." ^[13] Sheeran's previous outing, the Mathematics Tour, grossed over $875 million from 2022 to 2025 ^[16]. The evidence that fans stayed is thin. A small group of protesters gathered outside, and one concertgoer told Rolling Stone that "the concert still happened. There's still a ton of people here." ^[15] The reporting does not include ticket sales or resale prices from after the speech. So the apology's effect cannot yet be separated from the pull of a tour that large.

The record compares a defensive statement with an apology, and silence comes up only once, from Nichols. "Could he have potentially gone and hid for six months? The recovery Goodwin describes is among ticket holders ^[11]. Some of the cost fell on fellow performers, the openers who walked away ^[5]. The Macklemore decision also stays open, because Sheeran's next stop is Kraft's own Gillette Stadium ^[17]. By accepting Kraft's condition this quarter, Sheeran kept a date. Next quarter the question is whether other owners take up Kraft's invitation and ask for the same thing ^[3].
