The first confirmed sustained scavenging by the species in the Arabian Peninsula came off cameras set out to survey scavengers in general. The observation itself is solid; what is still missing is the denominator behind it.

The evidence here is video, and that is the part worth being pleased about. Three cameras ringed one carcass, and the footage was read for arrival times, visit frequency, visit duration and interactions between species [5]. The design does not leave room for argument about the result: an eagle spent nine consecutive hours at the carcass [6]. Nine hours is more than 37 percent of a day [18], spent on a food item this bird is not supposed to use, given that it is described as a specialist on two rock hyrax species [2].
What the footage does not carry is a denominator. It documents behavior at a carcass rather than a diet. There is no count of hyraxes available in that landscape during those weeks, and no rate of the form "eagle visits per carcass-day" to sit beside the one record [3]. The authors say the scavenging may be supplementing the diet when few hyraxes are around, and that more work is needed to know [9][19]. Fair, and worth naming what would settle it: the missing measurement is hyrax abundance, not more eagle footage.
The bait station supplies food as well as measuring behavior. Eagles arrived less than an hour after deployment [4], which tells you they were nearby and fast, not that they were short of hyraxes. Carcasses put out for research and carcasses put out to support vultures are the same object from an eagle's point of view, and this site is known to hold vultures, other raptors, foxes, wolves and brown-necked ravens [12].
The displacement result has the same shape. While the eagles were present, other scavengers kept their distance, with ravens on site but avoiding altercations [10], and the canids came only at night [11]. The correlation is clean, but the causal claim is not available from one carcass, because nothing separates eagle-driven avoidance from whatever schedule those canids keep anyway. The control is paired carcasses inside and outside occupied eagle territory in the same season, which is close to the seasonal and spatial expansion the authors propose, coupled with prey and movement data [13].
The label matters for one concrete reason. A bird that pulls hyraxes off rock faces has little contact with poisoned carrion. A bird that spends most of a day on a livestock carcass does. Poisoning already ranks among the known threats to eagles worldwide, through predator control campaigns and contaminated carcasses [14], and the authors argue those sources now need checking inside this species' range given the Arabian confirmation [15]. Lead author Bruno Martins frames the finding as bearing on both risks and opportunities for the species [17].
This fits a known pattern for the genus: African hawk-eagles and golden eagles are already known as opportunistic scavengers [16]. What was thin was the record for this one, reported only sparsely from Africa and never confirmed in Arabia until now [8]. One nine-hour sitting is a good reason to start counting.

A study published in the Journal of Raptor Research reports the first confirmed case of sustained carrion use by Verreaux's eagles (Aquila verreauxii) in the Arabian Peninsula.
Scavenging by Verreaux's eagle had previously been reported in a limited number of studies from Africa but remained poorly documented, and had never been confirmed in the Arabian Peninsula.
While the eagles were present at the goat carcass, other scavengers gave it a wide berth; brown-necked ravens (Corvus ruficollis) were present but avoided altercations with the eagles.
The canine scavengers did visit the carcass, but only at night.
Verreaux's eagles are highly specialized predators that feed on two species of rock hyrax, Procavia capensis and Heterohyrax brucei.
In December 2024, researchers from CIBIO-BIOPOLIS, Portugal, established a network of bait stations across the AlUla region in northwestern Saudi Arabia, using goat carcasses to assess scavenger activity.

Hard footage, single telling
The observation itself is about as concrete as field ecology gets: three cameras, a timed nine-hour stay, a peer-reviewed paper with a DOI. The weakness is not the camera, it is everything around it. Our coverage rests on one account, phys.org's, which reads as the study announcement and quotes only the lead author; there is no station count, no visit count, and no hyrax abundance figure to set the behaviour against.
One region, one season, one carcass
Counting what has actually happened rather than what it might mean: a single December 2024 field deployment in one region, one carcass under camera, one paper. The authors' own next step — monitoring across seasons and locations, with prey and movement data — is a description of work not yet done, and no second team or site has repeated the observation in anything we have.
A 'shift' needs a before
The paper's own subtitle promises 'Evidence of a Foraging Shift', and the reporting asks whether Verreaux's eagles are 'secret scavengers' — but a shift implies a measured earlier diet at this site, and none is offered. What is documented is a specialist eating carrion for nine hours on one occasion, in a place the reporting says already has periods of low prey. That is a real and publishable first; it is not yet a change in behaviour over time.
The authors' framing arrives intact
A research group announcing a first and a journal publishing one both benefit from the word 'first', and here that framing reaches the reader unmediated: the only quoted voice belongs to the lead author, and the piece follows the shape of the release it derives from, DOI block and all. Nothing suggests bad faith or a commercial interest — no funder or sponsor is named anywhere — but nobody in this story was positioned to push back on the interpretation either.
Trust the nine hours, not the trend
We would stand behind the specific events — eagles within the hour, nine hours on the carcass, ravens keeping their distance, canids arriving after dark — because cameras recorded them and a journal reviewed them. We would not yet stand behind the generalisation about the species' diet, or the implied change over time, on one site in one month with one publisher telling it.
