A methods demonstration turns up coyote ancestry in the Chihuahua lineage

The coyote signal came out of a study built to validate new techniques for reading ancient ancestry in living genomes, and the write-up reports it without a percentage or a date for when dog and coyote met.

"Part coyote" is a phrase that needs a number, and the phys.org write-up does not give one for the Chihuahua [9]. What it reports is presence [1], with two candidate causes: an accidental introduction into the breed's ancestors, or deliberate crossing of dog and coyote, perhaps many generations back [4].

Coyote ancestry has turned up before, in DNA from the remains of ancient domestic dogs in the Americas [11]. Gene flow into one lineage is a different claim from the descent of dogs as a whole. The segments in a living Chihuahua could have arrived by either of two routes: inheritance from pre-contact dogs that already carried them, or a cross much closer to the present [8].

The pre-contact component is thin to begin with. Earlier work put it at 4 percent in the Chihuahua and 3 percent in the xolo [5], which leaves roughly 96 percent of Chihuahua ancestry coming from elsewhere [1]. Most of that elsewhere is European, since dogs in the Americas today largely descend from breeds brought over from the 15th century onward [7].

On temperament, the write-up goes only as far as saying the findings "might partly explain why" Chihuahuas are bold, independent and agile instead of sedentary lapdogs [12]. Body size in the same account has a named gene behind it. Almost every small breed carries a mutation in IGF1, which affects cell growth and therefore size [13], and selection for small dogs carrying it appears to have happened very early in domestication [14].

Hybridization across canids is ordinary. Wolves and coyotes interbreed in the wild, especially where wolf-like behavioural traits are useful [15], and a dog-fox hybrid was recently reported in Brazil [16]. Within dogs alone, body size varies about 40-fold across breeds and types [17]. There is some evidence of diminutive dogs in pre-contact Mesoamerica, though how they relate to Chihuahuas is unknown [18], and breed histories in general resist reconstruction because the documentary record is often missing [10].

What to watch

  • A published ancestry fraction and a date for the coyote segments, which would decide between inheritance from pre-contact dogs and a later cross.
  • Whether the same dating method applied to other American breeds and village dogs reproduces the xolo's roughly 1700 admixture signal.
  • Any study tying a specific coyote-derived variant to a measured behaviour in Chihuahuas, with other small breeds as the comparison group.
