Kakao Ventures seeds a four-month-old startup that estimates the angiography frames the X-ray skipped

Corologic's AngioFilm interpolates low-frame-rate coronary angiography video in real time so the machine takes fewer X-ray pictures, and the seed money from Kakao Ventures and SNU Holdings is going to multicenter validation and approvals.

Why it matters

Corologic's premise is that the dose comes from the number of X-ray images captured, so the route to less of it is to capture fewer and generate the rest [6]. AngioFilm reads the position and movement of vessels and devices in the frames on either side of a gap, estimates the intermediate view, and writes a new frame in real time [5]. It runs on hardware inside the hospital, alongside angiography machines the hospital already owns [7]. The company did not disclose how much it raised, and the announcement does not include a measured dose reduction [5].

Kakao Ventures put the investment case on the software's independence from hardware vendors. "Because it is a standalone solution that is not tied to any particular equipment manufacturer, we see potential for expansion into global markets," said Jung Joo-yeon, a senior investment manager at the firm [11]. Independence is also a distribution problem. A vendor with an installed base gets a sale every time a hospital replaces a machine; an add-on has to be sold one procedure room at a time, to hospitals whose capital budget already went on the fluoroscopy suite [7].

The dates sit close together. The team, led by Professor Kang Si-hyuk of the cardiology division at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, incorporated in May [3]. That same month it presented research findings and demonstrated the product at EuroPCR in Paris [8]. In August it completed a medical device filing with Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety [9], and the seed round was announced on 15 September [1]. So the company was about four months old when the round closed [1], and the Paris demonstration falls in the founding month, which puts the underlying work at the hospital before the corporate entity existed [2]. SNU Holdings invested alongside Kakao Ventures [1].

I'd expect the validation, not the software, to set the timetable here. The stated use is letting staff follow vessel movement and the course of the procedure without interruption [6], and multicenter data has to show that an estimated frame supports that during a live intervention [2]. If it does, dose reduction becomes a software line item a hospital can justify on staff safety grounds. If interpolation loses a device tip at the wrong moment, the four remaining approval items never get tested [10].

The exposure Corologic is selling against is occupational as much as patient-side: the procedures are performed while viewing X-ray fluoroscopic images, and the staff take part in them repeatedly [4]. "In cardiovascular intervention, medical staff as well as patients are continuously exposed to radiation, so this is an area that needs a technological solution to improve safety," said Hwang Kyung-rae, chief executive of Corologic [13].

What to watch

  • Multicenter validation results with a dose figure and a diagnostic-quality comparison, which would show whether the claim holds outside Seoul National University Bundang Hospital.
  • Any approval from Korea's drug safety ministry beyond August's device filing, and a date for the FDA 510(k) submission.
  • A disclosed round size or a Series A, which would indicate what the four regulatory items are costing.
