With 1.5C conceded and 1.8C in view, the argument for researching sunlight reflection is getting louder, but its one piece of real-world evidence came from an accident, and the countries hosting the next UN talks refused to endorse such research.

The empirical core here is a single retrospective attribution, and it points the wrong way round. New fuel regulations cut sulfur dioxide from international shipping, rapid warming followed, and researchers read that warming as evidence the pollution had been cooling the planet incidentally all along [8]. Treated as an experiment, it happened by accident, without a control planet or a measurement plan written in advance. The phys.org analysis is appropriately careful about it, calling the post-2023 warming a *likely* case of inadvertent termination shock [8].
What that case does not tell you is how a deliberate program would behave. It gives a rough sense of how much cooling reflective particles were doing by accident. It does not establish the dose, duration, or side effects of doing it on purpose, and the analysis concedes the ecological effects of deployment are uncertain [6].
The one number solar radiation modification is built to move is global mean temperature. Between the 1.5C target the world is set to miss [1] and the 1.8C trajectory in the headline sits 0.3C [18], and advocates frame SRM as a complement to mitigation that limits the extent and duration of that overshoot while decarbonisation continues [10]. A temperature figure carries none of the rest: emissions keep running, since reflecting sunlight does not limit them [6], and ending a program once started would bring abrupt temperature rise [7]. That makes deployment a maintenance obligation with no clean exit, which is a different kind of commitment from building a wind farm.
On governance, the analysis argues the taboo is lifting, as it lifted earlier for adaptation and carbon removal [20]. The intergovernmental record it cites is less accommodating. When the UN Environment Assembly took up a Swiss proposal on SRM research in 2024, countries could not agree whether or how to regulate research at all, with Japan and Saudi Arabia pushing for it to continue and vulnerable Pacific and African countries resisting any wording that might read as endorsement [12][13]. NASA runs an exploratory program on space-based reflective dust clouds and the Trump administration has taken no side [15]. Elon Musk has spoken in favour, and the US-Israeli startup Stardust is pursuing research without public oversight [16].
That last fact is what makes the authors' narrower claim, that a research ban is no longer tenable [9], hard to argue with. A ban does not stop the research; it only decides who ends up doing it. The condition on that view: it only improves matters if publicly sanctioned research comes with disclosure the private route lacks, and nothing in the analysis suggests such rules exist yet [9]. Australia's position, no policy on research or deployment while federal funds support related work on local interventions [17], is the ordinary case rather than the exception.
