Apple's new Watch samples heart rate every five seconds and factors it into a daily readiness score
The Series 12 and Ultra 4 take around 17,280 heart rate readings a day and hand back a readiness score from 0 to 10 with four possible instructions. The app meant to interpret any of it arrives later this year.

What happened
- Apple said on September 9, 2026 that Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 carry a new Health Sensing System, with new optical and electrical heart sensors behind higher-frequency heart rate and HRV readings.
- Larger green LEDs let the two new watches take a heart rate reading every five seconds all day, which Apple says also makes the Move and Exercise rings more accurate.
- HRV is now sampled as often as every five minutes, which Apple describes as 24 times more frequently than before, and appears in a new section of the Heart Rate app.
- A readiness feature returns one 0-10 score a day with one of four recommendations, Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It, and updates it as new data arrives.

Why it matters
- constraint Sleep score is one of the readiness inputs, so the score only exists for people who keep the watch on overnight as well as through the day, and a night on the charger is a hole in the record.
- decision Anyone selling a recovery score now has to argue that interpretation rather than sampling rate is what the customer is paying for, because the sampling comes with hardware the user already bought.
- exposure Booking and paying for lab tests inside the Health app places Apple between a user and their diagnostics, and draws results Apple did not measure into the record it does hold.
The number lands before you are properly awake: 6 out of 10, the words Pace Yourself under it, a hill session already on the calendar. The decision in front of you has two branches, the session or not the session. The score has eleven values in it [17].
Readiness collapses those eleven into four instructions [4], which works out to about 2.75 score points per instruction [17]. That ratio is the honest description of most composite scores. The resolution exists for the chart; the action space is much smaller than the number implies. Apple has at least labelled the action space, which is more than most recovery scores bother to do.
Underneath, the sampling is real work. A reading every five seconds is about 17,280 heart rate samples in a 24-hour day [15]. HRV every five minutes is 288 readings a day, and since Apple calls that 24 times more frequent, the old cadence was roughly one every two hours, about a dozen a day [16]. Apple says the payoff is more accurate Move and Exercise rings [2], plus a Recovery HRV read judged against the user's own baseline rather than a population one [9].
What the material does not contain is any read on behaviour. Apple reports a study of more than 1,000 participants with representation across demographic groups, in which its heart rate sensing came out ahead of what the release calls leading wearables [6]. Accuracy is the right thing to test on a sensor, but it says nothing about whether a Recover recommendation ever produced a rest day that would not otherwise have happened, or how many people still open the readiness card in week six. The comparison devices are not named [6], which leaves a marketing claim with a sample size attached to it.
The sequencing matters for anyone planning around this. The sensors ship with the watches; the interpretation layer, meaning the redesigned Health app with the Apple Intelligence longevity insights, comes later this year [7]. The device spends its first months building a baseline that the feature meant to explain it cannot yet read.
The quieter addition is commerce. Per SlashGear, the Health app will let users schedule and buy lab tests and then integrate the results [12]. Continuous measurement, a Longevity tab that puts a user's data in the context of their overall age [11], and a place to buy the blood panel add up to Apple sitting in the loop of ordering diagnostics rather than only charting them, which is something other than a fitness tracker.
A frame for reviewing your own scores. Two axes: does the number move enough in a week to change a decision, and does the user hold a lever that moves the number. Move plus lever is a product, and training readiness sits there for people who actually train. Move plus no lever is anxiety with a chart, which is where an age-based longevity readout lands unless something actionable is attached to it. No move plus lever is a settings screen nobody opens. No move plus no lever is a graph.
Sumbul Desai, Apple's vice president of Health and Fitness, describes the goal as translating complex biometric data into clear guidance [10]. SlashGear's worry is that having more to track pushes some users into monitoring their wellness to an unhealthy degree [13]. Both can be true of the same score, and which one shows up depends on the person wearing it rather than on the sampling rate. If you are building against this, the measure worth keeping is how quickly your score earns a changed decision. Sampling rate now arrives bundled with a watch the customer already owns [2]. A bundled input stops being a differentiator the day it ships.
What to watch
- Whether the redesigned Health app and its Longevity tab actually ship this year, and on which iPhones.
- Whether Apple's 1,000-participant accuracy study appears anywhere that names the comparison wearables and the protocol.
- Which lab providers sit behind in-app test ordering, and what Apple retains of the results users import.
