Anthropic hands the chat-or-agent choice to a router inside Claude
Cowork, Design and two new betas called Docs and Slides now live in the same Claude window, and Claude itself decides which mode answers a prompt. Pro and Max subscribers see the betas first.

What happened
- Anthropic merged its Claude chatbot with the Cowork agentic tool with immediate effect, and moved the previously standalone Claude Design into the chat window at the same time.
- Anthropic says Claude now routes each prompt automatically to either Claude Chat or Claude Cowork, so the user no longer picks a tab for the task.
- Two features launched in beta alongside the merger: Claude Docs for documents and Claude Slides for decks.
- Claude Pro and Max subscribers get the betas first on web, desktop and mobile, with Team subscribers and free users following in the coming weeks.
- Claude Code, the company's coding agent, is unaffected by the change and remains a separate product.

Why it matters
- decision Teams that have to account for AI spend have to sample their own traffic to find out what mode is answering it, because the report does not describe any indicator or override in the interface.
- capability One surface makes it easier for Anthropic to bundle premium features into a single subscription and for employers to centralise employee AI use, which moves the buying unit from tool-by-tool to seat.
- precedent SiliconANGLE reports OpenAI is assembling the same kind of single product, so the choice of which tool handles a task becomes a vendor-side routing decision across the category.
Anthropic said in a blog post that before the merger, many customers struggled to know which AI tab to choose for a specific task [4]. I'd call that the most useful line in the announcement, because it is a vendor conceding that the product had handed the user a classification job it should have been doing itself.
The routing decision has a price attached. Agentic tools like Cowork reason through multistep tasks and make tool calls on the user's behalf. That can consume far more tokens than a simple chat exchange, and users are billed by token usage, according to SiliconANGLE [10]. If the merged Claude sends a one-line question down the agentic path, the compute cost climbs without the user noticing, the report says [10]. It does not say whether the interface shows which mode answered a given prompt, or whether a user can pin one [14].
Both betas export out into Microsoft and Google formats. Claude Slides drafts and edits decks, presents them inside Claude, and downloads them as PowerPoint or PDF [6]. Claude Docs drafts sections of text, helps with edits, lets several colleagues work on the same file in real time, and exports to Microsoft Word or Google Docs [7]. The drafting happens in the chat window.
Count what now sits in that one window and you get four: Cowork, Design, Docs and Slides [13]. Claude Code is the exception [9].
For whoever has to explain the usage numbers at the end of the month, the grid is small. One axis is what the request actually was, simple or multistep. The other is where it went, chat or Cowork. Two cells are fine. Watch the other two: a one-line lookup answered by the agentic path burns agentic tokens on a chat-sized question, and a multistep job answered in chat comes back as the weaker result. Run a plain sample, the ten prompts a team sends most often, matched against which mode came back. The token figures are the only place that mismatch surfaces [10].
What to watch
- Whether Anthropic exposes the routing decision in the interface, or adds a way to pin a prompt to chat only.
- Whether Claude Code is folded in too, or stays the one product outside the merged window.
- Whether Team and free tiers get Docs and Slides on the promised timeline, and under what usage limits.
