Satellite tracking shows female dotterels working several breeding sites across Northern Europe within a single season, which means the units conservation planners manage are smaller than the populations they contain.

Absence from a study site is not a destination. Decades of field observation could establish that female dotterels leave within days of laying, and that the timing is wrong for the return flight to North Africa [3], but no individual had ever been followed to see where she actually went [4]. Tags convert a gap in the field notebook into a line on a map.
One design detail does quiet work. The birds were caught both on the Hardangervidda plateau in southern Norway and at migration stopover sites in the Italian Alps [7], so the sample is not drawn only from females already loyal to one Norwegian study area. For a study whose central claim is about movement between study areas, that matters.
Then the distribution. A median of three settlement sites [8] means two moves for the typical female, and consecutive sites were usually less than 100 km apart [9], which puts the typical female's between-site travel somewhere under 200 km for the season [1]. The 1,343 km covered by the most wide-ranging bird [11] is roughly seven times that figure [2], and the single 973 km hop between two consecutive stays [10] sits far out in the same tail. Both readings are true and they do different jobs: the median describes what a dotterel usually does, while the maximum describes what one can do, and for a conservation unit it is the capability that binds.
The strangest number is the 41-day median stay at the final site [14]. A seven-week laying window is 49 days [8], so if that whole stay fell inside the window, only eight days would be left for everything preceding it [3]. Most of that long final stay therefore sits outside the laying season, and what the bird is doing there is precisely what a movement record cannot say.
The tracking also does not report whether any second, third or fourth settlement produced a mate or a clutch. Santema lists reproductive success among the open questions [16], which is the honest position: movement is a proxy for mating opportunity, not a measure of it. The early northward drift is consistent with females following the retreating snow line, and the authors offer that as a possibility [12]; the tracks establish the pattern, not the cue.
The finding worth acting on is the one that needs the fewest birds. Twenty-one females across three seasons, about seven a year [4], will not tell you how often a dotterel crosses 900 km. A single confirmed 973 km move inside one laying window [10] is enough to retire the assumption that the breeders on a plateau are a closed group. Santema frames it as connecting populations that field researchers have long studied separately [16]. The operational version is blunter: a June count on Hardangervidda and a July count several hundred kilometres away may include some of the same birds, and any management unit smaller than Northern Europe now owes an answer to that.

Females lingered at their final site for a median of 41 days, which the researchers describe as intriguing.
The new study is the first to investigate how far females of a polyandrous shorebird species travel.
Eurasian dotterels breed on exposed mountain ridges and Arctic tundra from Scotland through Scandinavia to Siberia, and are famously tolerant of people, a trait that long made them easy prey for hunters.
In Eurasian dotterels the female is larger and more brightly coloured than the male and takes the active role in courtship; once she has laid her clutch of three eggs she typically leaves the male, who incubates and raises the chicks alone.
Decades of field observations showed that most female dotterels leave the breeding site shortly after laying, which seemed too early for the return migration to their North African wintering grounds, leading ornithologists to suspect they seek further mating opportunities elsewhere.
None of these females had ever been followed to confirm the idea that they move on in search of further mating opportunities.

Peer-reviewed, one team, twenty-one birds
Satellite fixes are about the most unarguable evidence in field ornithology — they tell you where a bird was, and 21 tagged females over three seasons is not a small effort for a species this hard to follow. What they cannot tell you is what she did when she got there, and the Max Planck team says so outright: remating and female incubation both need verifying at the nest. Peer review in Proceedings B carries real weight; the fact that no ornithologist outside the group is heard from carries the other way.
No one has picked it up yet
There is nothing to count. Kempenaers' closing remarks are a to-do list — combine tracking with fieldwork, tag more birds in more regions — and not one conservation agency, monitoring scheme or second research group appears in this reporting acting on the connectivity result. A published finding with an invitation attached is not uptake, and we will not manufacture a number for it.
The headline outruns the tags
Our own headline sends these females off 'in pursuit of extra mates', and that is the one thing the tracks cannot establish — the team's stated position is that remating remains unverified, and that some of those long final stays may instead be females finally sitting on a clutch of their own. The dek's leap to conservation planners' management units goes further still; Kempenaers said only that local populations 'may in fact be connected in ways we have so far missed'. Add that 973 km and 1,343 km are outliers standing in for a median bird who shuffles under 100 km at a time, and the framing sits a step or two ahead of the data. Phys.org itself is the moderating influence here, not the aggravating one.
Told entirely in the institute's voice
One institute, two co-first authors, both quoted, nobody else. The story arrives with the furniture of an institutional announcement — 'A summer odyssey' as a title, a closing thought about how even well-studied birds can surprise us, and an explicit case for tagging more birds in more regions, which is also a case for the money to do it. None of that makes a median wrong. It does mean the people who chose what is surprising about this result are the same people who produced it.
Solid facts, no triangulation
We are comfortable with what was measured and uncomfortable with how narrow the pipe is. The figures hold together internally and even betray their own tension — a 41-day final stay will not fit tidily inside a seven-week laying window — which is a good sign about the reporting's fidelity to the paper. But there is a single publisher, a single research group, no independent check on the numbers, and no adoption evidence at all, so our reading of what this means beyond the 21 birds stays provisional.
