Sugar kelp spores settle too fast to mix Maine's four coastal populations
Sugar kelp is mobile only briefly as a spore, so genes move freely within each stretch of Maine's outer coast and barely at all between them. The state's kelp farms cut their starting tissue from those wild forests.
