Corals hosting heat-tolerant algae lost more tissue when infection followed the heat

A Boston University group reports in Science Advances that Durusdinium symbionts leave their coral host with a persistently switched-on immune response, which helps through a short heat spike and hurts when a pathogen arrives next.
