Star coral cores trace up to 80 percent of a Gulf reef's nitrogen to the Mississippi basin
A Max Planck and LSU team read nitrogen isotopes in Gulf star corals back to 1753, finding the Mississippi basin behind more than 60 percent of the reef's nitrogen in recent decades and a human signal beginning near 1850.
