Fast-spreading conifer fires burn twice the share of their area at high severity

Jonathan Coop's team found the fastest of about 3,500 North American conifer fires burned roughly half their area severely, the slowest about a quarter. Fast fires also left burned stands farther from living seed trees, a sign some forest types may come back as something else.
