Wildlife Victoria's records are reports made by people [25], and that determines what they can carry. About 2,400 animals across ten years works out to roughly 240 a year for an entire state [21], and the published account gives no count of buildings surveyed and no population figure to scale those records against [29]. So the dataset can say which species people find in their homes, and where in the house. It cannot estimate what share of dwellings hosts wildlife, and with no year-by-year breakdown reported [26], it cannot show whether building use is climbing.
The breakdown deserves a careful reading too. Cavities are reported as 40% of studied species while garages and similar structures are given as 19% of animals [4][5], and the six categories add to exactly 100 once interior rooms at 10%, under-house spaces at 9% and utility services at 6% are included [7][8][9][23]. That reads like one partition of a single set rather than two different denominators. If the 40% is species, it is roughly 14 of the 36 [22]. Either way the ranking is the finding and the decimals are not.
The mechanism is the more interesting part of the paper. Roof and wall cavities reproduce the conditions of tree hollows, spaces under houses resemble sheltered ground or burrows, balconies act as cliff ledges, and air-conditioning units and water heaters make good reptile microclimates [10]. More than 300 Australian native species depend on hollows that take centuries to form [11], and large hollow-bearing trees in urban areas are declining [12]. Substitution is a coherent reading of that pattern. What report data cannot do is test it: nothing here establishes whether an animal in a wall breeds or survives as well as one in a hollow [27], and there is no comparison group.
Sealing is where the design argument gets concrete. New homes must be sealed against air leaks that account for 15% to 25% of winter heat loss [16], and the authors are explicit that an energy-efficient house need not be a wildlife-free one [20]. Scotland's swift bricks go into external walls [17], and Germany's Brantstrasse building carries swift bricks, bat boxes and hedgehog nest boxes in its structure [18]. The account does not say whether such a cavity can be installed without breaching the air barrier the new standards demand [28]. That is the engineering question any Australian code would have to settle before the voluntary one-box-per-building model runs by wildhouses [19] turns into a requirement.
Scale keeps the claim honest. Roughly 240 reported animals a year sits beside a national build rate near 240,000 homes a year [24], so these reports are a behavioural signal rather than a population estimate. The design framing survives anyway, for one narrow reason: a wall cavity closes with a single repair [13] while the hollow it imitates takes centuries [11]. Buildings are a stopgap worth designing on purpose, and exclusion stays reasonable where an animal poses a genuine health, safety or welfare risk [14].

One telling, by the people who ran the study
The whole story rests on the researchers describing their own paper, republished intact. The records underneath are help-calls to Wildlife Victoria, so they measure where humans noticed an animal and phoned about it, not where animals live — and with no count of buildings and no population figure, 2,400 floats free of any base. The percentage table gives the game away on precision: cavities are 40% of species, the other five categories are shares of animals, and all six total 100.

A haven, on the evidence of distress calls
"Your house may be a haven for wildlife" is a generous reading of a decade of people ringing a rescue line. Habitat means somewhere animals persist, and nothing here shows the microbat in the curtains or the duck on the balcony fledging anything; breeding and survival simply go unmentioned. The compatibility promise — efficient homes needn't be wildlife-free — is asserted rather than built. What survives the discount is the timing argument, which is real and does not depend on the softer claims.
The authors are also the advocates
This is a paper's authors writing the coverage of their own paper, in a format designed for exactly that, and the piece closes on a policy ask: adapt Australian houses, follow Scotland. That is a legitimate genre, but it means the framing, the choice of which numbers to lead with, and the absence of the awkward questions all sit with parties who benefit from the argument landing. The republishing outlet adds distribution, not friction.
Trust the direction, not the decimals
Two things are solid: wildlife does use the fabric of houses, and Australia is about to build a great many of them under tightening sealing rules. Almost everything quantitative is softer than it looks — one unverified origin, an ambiguous percentage base, no denominator, no trend, no outcomes. We would hold the argument and discount the numbers until someone outside the study touches them.
