iOS 27 puts CarPlay video behind an AirPlay certification only carmakers can grant

Install iOS 27 in the driveway and the first change a driver can act on is the dashboard layout. Any compatible Home Screen widget now goes into CarPlay from Settings > General > CarPlay, tap the car, then Widgets > Add Widgets, with drag to rearrange and toggles for Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions ^[3]. None of that depends on the vehicle. Neither does the Now Playing progress bar and its persistent mini-player ^[4], the Apple Music library filters ^[5], the fourteen Celosia wallpaper colors ^[6], or natural language directions that can be asked to avoid tolls and highways ^[7].

Video browsing works only when the car is parked, and it drops to audio when the driver shifts into drive, so the vehicle has to report its drive state to iOS ^[10]. That is the reason the feature requires an automaker to certify AirPlay video integration, and the reason a phone update on its own cannot switch it on ^[9]. MacRumors wrote: "As of writing, no manufacturer has announced plans to support the feature." ^[11]

Sorted by what has to be true for each one to work, six of the nine additions reach every CarPlay car with the phone update alone, two need the vehicle to cooperate, and one needs a particular iPhone ^[16]. MacRumors put the practical effect this way: "Some of the biggest additions won't do anything in the vast majority of vehicles on the road today." ^[15]

The phone-gated tier is narrower than its name suggests. Conversational Siri in the car, with chats syncing back to the Siri app, needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, and access comes off a waitlist the user joins in Settings > Siri ^[13].

For a team scoping dashboard work this quarter, two questions sort the backlog. Does the feature need something only the car can supply, either drive state or a handoff to the built-in screens? Route sharing sits in that column with video: navigation apps can pass route data, including EV charging stops and range, to a vehicle's infotainment display or digital instrument cluster, and only where the car supports it ^[12]. Does the feature need Apple Intelligence on the phone and a waitlist slot? Anything that answers no to both ships to the whole CarPlay base the day the driver updates, which is the tier that contains widgets, scrubbing, filters and Maps ^[16].

Apple's own phone-side improvements sit in that same tier. Apple says wireless CarPlay connections are more dependable in iOS 27, with better GPS accuracy and navigation heading detection, and no new hardware is required ^[8].

The voice control template is open to any category of CarPlay app, and MacRumors expects it to arrive gradually because nothing changes until individual app makers adopt it ^[14]. The Apple Music filter behavior comes with a similar invitation, with Apple saying third-party music apps can adopt it too ^[5].
