AppleCare One undercuts two top-end iPhone plans by $8 a month
Apple's three-device plan costs $20 a month while a single iPhone 17 Pro Max plan runs $14, so the switch pays for anyone holding two expensive phones. The eligibility rules stop at one Apple account in five countries.

Why it matters
- decision A household with two flagship iPhones is already past the point where the shared plan is cheaper, so the choice is settled by adding two monthly prices before anyone counts devices.
- cost Consolidating moves the subscription line only. A cracked screen still costs $29 and a stolen iPhone still costs $149, so a household that claims often saves nothing by consolidating.
- constraint Because coverage follows one Apple account, the unit of purchase is a person or a family, and an IT manager buying protection for staff phones has no consolidated option in this lineup.
- capability At $6, a fourth slot costs less per device than any iPhone plan Engadget prices, so an old iPad that still meets the age rule becomes worth covering when it was not before.
Somebody with a new iPhone, a two-year-old iPad and a pair of AirPods opens Settings, then General, then AppleCare & Warranty [16]. That screen shows one device and one price. AppleCare+ covers exactly that one device, and nothing else on the desk [1].
For iPhones the crossover arrives at two devices. Two iPhone 17 Pro Max plans at $14 each come to $28 a month, $8 more than the three-device subscription [1]. Two iPhone 17e plans land exactly on $20, matching AppleCare One with a slot to spare [2]. Engadget's own worked example overshoots that line by $7.47 a month, or $89.64 over a year [7].
Paid monthly, the Pro Max plan costs $168 a year against $140 up front, and the 17e $120 against $100; both discounts work out at about 16.7 percent [3]. AppleCare One is quoted only as a $20-a-month plan, which comes to $240 over twelve months [6][4]. Two Pro Maxes on annual billing cost $280, so the shared plan still wins by $40 [5]. Two 17e's cost $200, and the separate plans win by the same $40 [6]. Engadget says some device combinations do come in under $20 a month on individual plans [17].
Theft and loss coverage applies to iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches, up to two claims in one year [13]. Engadget's explainer does not say whether that limit is counted per device or per plan under AppleCare One. For a family putting two iPhones on one subscription, the difference is two claims each or two between them [18].
The eligibility rules describe the buyer. Only devices registered under your Apple account can be added [11]. Most have to be four years old or newer, and headphones one year old or less [10]. Those rules point at a household.
Add the monthly AppleCare+ prices of the two devices you would actually file a claim on. Above $20, AppleCare One is cheaper and the third slot costs nothing more. At $20 or below, keep the separate plans and buy them by the year for the 16.7 percent. Devices past the third cost $6 each, including ones already owned [9]. That $6 comes in $4 under the cheapest iPhone plan Engadget prices, at $10 a month [9].
What to watch
- Whether Apple sells AppleCare One outside its five launch markets, which would change the answer for anyone currently locked into per-device plans.
- Whether an annual-pay option appears for AppleCare One and where it is priced against twelve monthly payments.
- Whether the $6 add-on price holds for a fifth and sixth device or steps up as slots grow.
