Fifteen years of reading colonial survey books against Melbourne's surviving native flora has turned lot-corner tree marks into a species-level picture of the city's original woodlands, with modelled density laid over the top.

The archive is a sample, and its sampling rule sets the limits of what can be claimed from it. A tree got marked because a boundary needed a corner, not because it typified the stand around it [2]. What survives is a scatter of points strung along survey lines, held now by Victoria's Public Records Office [3] and georeferenced against the modern street grid [7]. The space between the lines has to be filled in, which is why the density and composition layer came out of mathematical modelling rather than off the page [6]. The other map stays closer to the record, plotting where marked trees actually stood: two large Box trees under what is now the National Theatre in St Kilda, and a line of Gums along the present course of the Birrarung-Yarra between Cremorne and South Yarra [17].
Then there is the translation problem. The books use folk names, and the team resolves them by reading those names against native vegetation still growing in Melbourne [8]. "Gums" in the inner suburbs mostly means River Red Gum [9]. "Box" is a bark category, and the researchers narrow it to Yellow, Grey or Red Box using the surveyors' own soil descriptions [11], which turns a box entry into a three-way call settled by that second variable [2]. The "Oaks" are Drooping Sheoaks rather than any Quercus [15], which is the clearest evidence that reading this archive literally would put the wrong genus on the map. The matching step carries a real assumption: anything that no longer grows near the city cannot be recovered by comparison with what does.
The record was also gathered over roughly 17 years rather than in one season [1], by parties working different districts at different times [1]. So the baseline runs across that span of years, and it took about as long to assemble as it did to survey [4].
As a reference condition for greening work, I would trust this at the level of woodland type and locality, and not below it. The eastern forests were denser and more diverse, with stringybarks and several acacias in the lists [14], and diversity is where a corner-tree sample thins fastest, because a lot boundary needs one tree and the rarer associates are the least likely to be standing at a corner. The authors say as much: the reconstruction is more accurate where more trees were marked [16]. That reading fits how a planting program would use it anyway, choosing a palette for a district rather than a tree for a nature strip.
This dataset stays silent on what grew below the canopy, how old or how large most of those trees were, and how the same species mix would behave in a hotter, drier city. Use the 1840s composition as a starting point for argument, adapting it to local conditions instead of copying it directly. The method itself is established across North America; Melbourne is the first time the pieces have been brought together here [5]. What is new is that a ledger written for conveyancing reads as a species inventory.

Maps of what would become metropolitan Melbourne were created between the late 1830s and the mid-1850s by colonial surveyors including Robert Hoddle, William Wedge Darke and Henry Boorn Foote, who traversed different districts with convict survey parties to partition land for sale to British settlers.
The surveyors marked the course of creeks and rivers, locations of swamps, routes of early roads and the nature of the soil, and marked individual trees to determine the corners of lots.
The early European maps are stored in Victoria's Public Records Office (PROV).
Marked "witness trees" include a pair of large "Box" trees where The National Theatre in St Kilda now stands, and a row of "Gums" running through the current path of the Birrarung-Yarra River between Cremorne and South Yarra.
The authors say they have worked over the past 15 years to reconstruct these landscapes and now have a first ecological view of 1840s Melbourne.

The specifics are unusually falsifiable for a history piece: a named public archive holds the survey books, three surveyors are named, species come with binomials, and the surviving Yellow Boxes are placed precisely enough to go and stand under — Observatory Gate, Moorabbin Station, Highett. What is absent is the other half of the ledger. No publication, dataset or map is linked, and the step that converts scattered corner marks into a density surface across the metropolis is described only as complex mathematical modelling.

Nobody outside the research team appears in this reporting. There is no public release of either map, no dataset or archive citation a reader could pull, and not a word about planners, councils, botanic gardens or revegetation programs consulting the reconstruction. Fifteen years of work with no disclosed downstream user is not low adoption; it is unreported adoption, and we will not invent a number for it.
Slightly ahead of its receipts
The overreach is narrow and lives in two words. "First" for Melbourne is the authors grading their own novelty with nothing cited on either side of the comparison, and "complex" stands in for the entire modelling apparatus behind the density map. Set against that, the piece disciplines itself where it counts: it admits accuracy falls away where fewer trees were marked, and it reports the null result that not one witness tree could be found still standing. The looser habit is chronological — a record spanning some seventeen years gets sold variously as 1830s, 1840s and 200-year-old forests.
Researchers narrating their own decade and a half
This is written in the first person by the people whose fifteen years are on the line, and republished by a science aggregator that adds no scrutiny of its own. The currency at stake is scholarly credit rather than revenue: no funder, product, land-use interest or commercial partner is disclosed, and nothing in the findings favours a paying party. That keeps the pressure moderate — it explains the confident "first" and the thin methods paragraph, not a distorted result.
One voice, locally testable
Our whole read of this story comes from a single outlet relaying a single team, and the text we hold trails off mid-sentence in the Silver Banksia passage, so even that one telling is partial. Confidence is nonetheless not low: the species-and-street-corner layer is stable, internally consistent and cheap for a Melbourne ecologist to check, while the priority and modelling assertions sit unexamined. We are reasonably sure what the reconstruction says, and much less sure how well it was built.
