Why it matters

An AI czar has to be a person, and the job has been empty since David Sacks left earlier this year [12]. Adam Kovacevich, chief executive of Chamber of Progress, a center-left coalition of technology companies, said the White House has been making AI policy on the fly since Sacks departed, and that it genuinely misses having an organizing leader like him [12]. Trump said he would announce a czar before long, and that he hoped only people with high IQs would apply [2].
The template he chose is seven years old [19]. The Space Force was created in 2019, during his first term, and he called it an enormous success [1][3].
The rest of the post was a scale argument. Trump predicted AI would become the next industrial revolution, comparable to the internet but far larger and more influential, and said it could account for as much as 25% of US gross domestic product [4]. He said the United States is ahead of China and the rest of the world [5]. He said the trouble began with attacks on data centers, and that once people realized data centers become wealthy and prestigious facilities in their communities, the attacks moved to AI itself [7]. His administration, he said, would not obstruct or suppress the industry in any way, and would cherish it, support it and watch it grow [8].
Several industry figures told Politico that the industry had little real knowledge of the decision before the post appeared [10].
For anyone underwriting a site, the part of this record with a constituency behind it is electoral. AI has become a central issue in the midterm campaign, and Republican politicians are moving away from their support for AI and data centers as voters in their districts turn against them [17][15].
So the subsidy-and-speed reading of Washington holds on rhetoric and is untested on instruments. I'd expect the terms that price a 2027 project to be set in a state legislature and by candidates running in districts that host the hardware. The counter-thesis is that the czar arrives with real authority over federal permitting and power, and the state drafting exercise gets preempted. Kovacevich named the bind: the president clearly feels pressure to say something, he said, but he is caught in a dilemma, because until a few days ago he had been calling all of this a hoax [11].
What to watch
