Shedd's four beluga deaths test what the Marineland rescue counted as success
Three of the four belugas that died within a month at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium came from the Marineland relocation, an operation judged complete when the animals arrived alive in padded containers this summer.

What happened

Why it matters

Three of the four dead belugas came from Marineland [21]. Beethoven, 34, did not; he had lived at Shedd for years [3].
Thirty belugas left Marineland in the summer move [6]. Three of them were dead at a single receiving aquarium inside about a month, or 10 percent of the relocated beluga group [22]. Osiris was 26, Peekachu 23 and Rain 20, an average age of 23 [23].
Shedd said its rescued whales had been under 24-hour supervision and receiving intensive, specialized care [11]. That description of the care was the countable part when Vox reported that the animals had been successfully transferred to aquariums and marine parks in the US and Spain [7].
The question here is which number the organizations put their name to in public. Vox called the operation "a frankly incredible undertaking" [25] and then wrote that "in some regards, the international flight wasn't even the hardest part of the whales' journeys" [9].
The same habit shows up in how the sector argues its value. Vox's Kenny Torrella writes that zoos and aquariums and their defenders claim three protections: raising money for wildlife conservation projects, helping reintroduce vulnerable species to the wild, and inspiring visitors to take an interest in the environment [13]. One of the three has a figure attached to it. In 2022, the most recent year with data, one group of accredited zoos and aquariums spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars on habitat projects [15]. Reintroducing endangered species to the wild is rare and difficult [16], and surveys of visitors show that seeing a wild animal in a tourist setting does not generally move people on welfare or stewardship [17].
Shedd's motto is "For Love of Waterkind" [14], and Vox reports that living in captivity in a tourist setting can be stressful or worse for the animals themselves [18].
What to watch
- Shedd's findings on cause of death for the four whales, and whether any of them names something transfer-related.
- Whether the other US and Spanish facilities that received Marineland animals report deaths of their own.
- Whether accredited bodies begin publishing post-transfer survival data for relocated cetaceans.
