A validated fecal hormone assay read higher in hedgehogs that died after rehabilitation admission
Emily Harper's team validated three non-invasive fecal glucocorticoid assays in European hedgehogs. The most sensitive one read higher in animals that later died and in those carrying the gut parasite Capillaria.

What happened

Why it matters

Validating a hormone assay in a new species is a proof problem. The test has to move when the animal's stress physiology moves, and stay flat when other things move [8]. Two designs do that job. One injects hormone and tracks blood at intervals, which needs a veterinary surgeon to draw the samples [7]. The other collects feces before and after a stressful event and lets a known stressor supply the challenge [7].
Harper's group used the second, with admission to rehabilitation as the stressor. Capture, transport, examination and veterinary treatment all arrive in a short window, and all are known to be stressful in other animals [12]. Fecal glucocorticoids peaked the day after admission and were lower seven days on [11].
Because those events come as a package, the study shows the assay responds to a stressor without ranking the contribution of each step [12]. Deciding whether to change a handling protocol needs a design that varies one step at a time.
Three assays already in use in other mammals cleared the relevance test [9]. Selection then came down to spread: the one carried forward showed the largest difference between its lowest and highest readings [10], so two were set aside [17]. Sensitivity, in this design, means the width of that range on hedgehog samples [8].
The two associations Harper reports are the ones a clinician would most want and the hardest to read. Hedgehogs that died after admission had significantly higher fecal glucocorticoids than those that survived [13], and animals infected with the gut parasite Capillaria had significantly higher levels than uninfected ones [14]. Neither comparison fixes a direction. An animal arriving in poor condition can mount a larger hormonal response and also be likelier to die, and the physiology in Harper's own account runs both ways on the parasite: sustained glucocorticoid elevation reduces immunity [6], and an established infection could raise glucocorticoids on its own.
The phys.org account did not report sample sizes or the magnitude of either difference [18]. Without an effect size, a raised reading at admission is not yet something a centre can act on for an individual hedgehog.
The population this could reach is large. Hedgehogs are the most rescued mammal in the UK, with estimates of around 40,000 in captivity at any one time [3], and the European hedgehog is in decline [4]. The near-term use is measurement: a validated marker lets a centre compare its own intake and treatment routines against itself, and it makes post-release monitoring possible without recapture [15]. Harper writes that captivity, handling, examination and veterinary treatment can all raise stress in an animal that is already compromised [16].
What to watch
- Whether the Conservation Physiology paper reports sample sizes and effect sizes for the survivor versus non-survivor difference, figures missing from the phys.org account.
- A follow-up design that varies one admission step at a time, so the assay can rank handling, transport and examination instead of the bundle.
- Fecal sampling of released hedgehogs, which would show whether glucocorticoid levels settle back after return to the wild.
