The Anthropocene's authors publish the evidence stratigraphers judged behind closed doors

The International Commission on Stratigraphy turned the epoch down in 2024 after reading a case that stayed unpublished. That case is now in print in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, and its authors argue the idea's real work has moved outside geology.

What happened

Why it matters

  • constraint With no ratified base in the timescale, anyone using "Anthropocene" in a dataset or a legal filing has to declare their own start date, so figures carrying the label do not line up across users.
  • contradiction The only account of why the vote failed comes from the people who filed the proposal, with no voting stratigrapher's reasoning set beside it, so the claim that the data went unchallenged remains untested here.
  • exposure States and rights holders whose maritime boundaries were drawn on an assumed-permanent coastline are the ones exposed as sea ice retreats and coasts erode under those lines.
  • capability A rejected proposal whose full case is in the journals can be attacked, reused or refiled by people who were never in the room where it was judged.

Set the seven decades against the comparison and the objection gets concrete. From the 1952 plutonium level to the vote is 72 years [7][3]. Twelve millennia is about 167 times that span, and the Holocene runs a little short of 12 millennia, so the true factor sits just under 167; the millions of years an epoch conventionally covers is roughly 14,000 times 72 years [10]. The proposal's marker is sharp and worldwide, and its span is short by the standard the same body applies to every other epoch [7][9]. Both of those things can be true at once, which is roughly what the authors say happened [8].

The second paper runs on a pattern rather than a mechanism. Steep growth curves turn up in aluminium and plastics output, in supermarket chicken consumption and in telecommunications use, alongside the familiar temperature curve, all bending around the middle of the twentieth century [14][13]. The authors are direct about the limit: the human causes and consequences behind those curves are much harder to pin down, and belong to history, economics, law, education and politics as much as to Earth science [15]. Curves that bend together fix a date without identifying what drove them, a limit the paper itself acknowledges.

The idea that the framework has outrun the label is where the evidence here is thinnest. The institutes are real, and the weighting of their design toward the social sciences and humanities over the Earth sciences is the genuinely novel part of them [12]. Educators are building curricula for the conditions their students will inherit [19]. Legal scholars are working on how to adapt a law of the sea that assumed four centuries of fixed coastline [16][18]. The article names institutes, curricula and legal scholarship, but no treaty body, regulator or monitoring programme has adopted an Anthropocene-dated baseline [20]. That distinction matters because only a metric already in operational use binds anyone, and this article names none.

None of this touches the physical record the proposal was built on: a planet that is hotter and more polluted, and increasingly degraded and reshaped both at the surface and underground by human activity [23]. Whether the word ends up on the timescale or only on a syllabus, the measurements are the same measurements, and after these two papers they can be cited line by line rather than on the authors' reputation [5][6].

What to watch

  • Whether any stratigrapher who voted against the proposal now answers the published corpus in the peer-reviewed literature.
  • Whether a re-proposal returns with the 1952 plutonium horizon attached to a shorter-duration unit than an epoch.
  • Whether a monitoring programme or treaty process adopts a dated Anthropocene baseline rather than using the term loosely.
