Roblox lets creators publish games as standalone apps outside its own platform
The prompt-to-game tool Build is now live in three countries, and the standalone app builds that would take Roblox titles off roblox.com were announced at the developer conference with no ship date.

What happened
- Build, which turns natural-language prompts into playable games, expands from New Zealand to Serbia and Singapore and gains desktop access, an asset library and iterative control.
- Roblox said creators will soon be able to publish their games as separate apps on mobile, PC and consoles, with the Roblox engine running underneath them.
- A new Roblox Wallet pays creators in real money by the end of each business day and lets them transfer the balance out to other bank accounts.

Why it matters
- decision A studio choosing an engine has to decide whether it wants Roblox's audience or Roblox's runtime, and only the audience side has features it can use this quarter.
- constraint Same-day payouts improve cash flow only for creators in the United States who are 18 or over; everyone else waits on a global expansion with no date attached.
- exposure If play moves into standalone apps and browser tabs, the hours total Baszucki cites stops describing where games are actually played, and the announcements do not say how that play is counted.
- capability Extending prompt-based scene generation into Roblox Studio puts the same generator in front of professional teams that already ship commercially on the platform.
A creator in Belgrade can open Build this week, type a prompt and get a playable game [3]. A studio that wants to put a Roblox-made title in the App Store has been given the word "soon" and no date [5].
That asymmetry runs through the announcement list. Prompt-based scene generation is later this year, and it will also land inside Roblox Studio [4]. NPCs that can playtest a game are later this year too [7]. In-browser joins by link are year-end [6]. The standalone builds, the single piece that would let a Roblox game live somewhere a player never has to visit Roblox, carry no timing at all [5].
The features that keep play on the platform are more concrete. Discovery will push shorter-format games to younger users and longer-playtime games to older ones [10]. A Friends chat tab travels with a player from game to game and takes voice typing [9]. In the Moments vertical feed, a player will be able to tap any avatar in a clip and buy the items on it [12]. David Baszucki, the founder and chief executive, said players spent over 29 billion hours cumulatively across 180 countries in the last quarter [18]. Nothing in the announcements explains how a session inside a standalone app or a browser tab counts toward a number like that [20].
The engine work underneath is unglamorous and real: an orthographic camera, animated image containers and direct sprite-sheet import for 2D animation [11]. Creators can also add an offline mode so play continues on a weak connection [8].
Creator payouts are concentrated in the recent past. Game makers have earned more than $5 billion on Roblox since 2013, and $1.7 billion of that in the last twelve months [13][14]. Divide the trailing year by the cumulative floor and you get 34 percent; because the $5 billion is a floor and not a total, the real share is somewhat under that [19]. A Roblox Card is due next year to spend those earnings wherever the card is accepted [17].
For anyone deciding whether to build here, the split is between wanting the audience and wanting the runtime. The audience half needs no country check and no separate build pipeline. The runtime half is a plan with three countries of prompt tooling behind it [3]. If a 2027 release depends on shipping a Roblox-built binary to a console store, the only timing Roblox has published is soon [5].
What to watch
- A ship date and store terms for the standalone mobile, PC and console builds Roblox says are coming soon.
- Whether Build reaches markets beyond New Zealand, Serbia and Singapore, and whether the Studio scene generator lands this year as described.
- Whether the Wallet's global expansion keeps the end-of-business-day payout, and whether creators under 18 ever get access.
