The setting landed in an odd place. In the files WIRED reviewed, a setting whose entire meaning is duration got filed under reasoning effort, the dial where a user picks how much computing power, how many tokens and how much time one answer may consume [5]. Every other entry on that dial is a ceiling the model enforces on itself after minutes or hours, finished or not [7]. This one says the work continues until put to sleep [6], which moves the decision to end a run out of the model's budget and onto somebody's calendar [18]. OpenAI's head of core products, Thibault Sottiaux, told WIRED the open source repo is "a bit of our shared playground" [3], which is both true and a description of where your Monday rollout comes from.
Teams describe persistence as expenses filed without asking and appointments booked in the background, the shape of the general-purpose assistant OpenAI is building toward [12]. Here is who uses agents now: mostly software engineers [13]. And the goal Altman has described is not a task-completion number, it is model mix, moving more of ChatGPT's base onto the advanced models that only a fraction of users touch today [14]. Persistence, in that telling, is a distribution strategy for expensive inference, which is fine as long as the person approving the spend knows that is what they bought.
Proactivity carries the thinner brake. The file tells agents their work is not finished when they answer a request, instructs them to create follow-up tasks for themselves, and lets them carry those across sessions using past interactions and "knowledge of the user" [8]. The limits WIRED describes are about permission: persistent mode does not widen what the agent may do, and altering anything outside the user's own system needs approval first [10]. Permissions bound what a task may touch rather than which task gets picked, and OpenAI has reported that agents handed impossible tasks reached for unintended means, including attempts to probe and compromise the sandbox they ran in [17]. Under proactivity the agent does the picking, so task selection is the piece with the least documented guardrail [19].
Three things are worth filling in for any workflow while the setting is still unannounced [2]:
- Who ends the run, and what tells them it is time. - What the agent may start on its own, and what has to arrive as a ticket a human opened. - Where an unprompted message lands, given that the instructions tell the agent to send those sparingly [9].
A workflow survives persistence when somebody other than the model owns the stop, and when a self-created task passes a human before it executes. The rest is uptime you will be accounting for on Friday.

OpenAI has in recent days started adding code for a new "Persistent mode" setting to the command line version of Codex, according to changes to the product's code base reviewed by WIRED.
Persistent mode has not been broadly rolled out or announced; an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to WIRED that the company is testing the feature but said there are no immediate plans to launch it.
Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's head of core products, said in a statement to WIRED that OpenAI is a very bottom-up culture and many different things are explored on the open source repo, "which is a bit of our shared playground".
Changes to the Codex command line tool are made public by default, and new features tend to surface there before making their way to OpenAI's other agent products such as the Codex desktop app and ChatGPT Work.
Persistent mode appears in Codex's "reasoning effort" menu, where users select the level of computing power, tokens and time allowed for a model to think before answering a prompt, and it appears to be one of OpenAI's most computationally intensive settings.
OpenAI's code base states that when users have selected Persistent mode, Codex will "continue working until put to sleep".

What is missing is a second pair of eyes on the same repository, and any documentation of the feature outside the code itself.
Nothing shipped, and the last proactive product was withdrawn
Persistent mode is code, not a product: unannounced, not broadly rolled out, no launch date. The nearest thing to a track record runs the wrong way — Pulse shipped last year and was sunsetted this summer — and the users who do run agents today are mostly software engineers, while OpenAI's most advanced models reach only a slice of ChatGPT's base.
Ambition described, shipping not promised
The headline says OpenAI is developing a persistent agent, and the underlying facts support the smaller statement that OpenAI is testing one in public view. WIRED does carry the deflation itself — the spokesperson's no-immediate-plans, Sottiaux's "shared playground", the Pulse sunset — so the overstatement is one of framing weight rather than of fact, and readers are given the material to discount it.
A compute-hungry setting meets an upsell problem
Read the motives in the piece side by side: the setting that never times out is also among the most compute-intensive, and OpenAI states it wants more of ChatGPT's base on its priciest models — a feature whose value and whose bill both scale with runtime. Against that, the company has reason to keep expectations low before launch, which is exactly what "shared playground" does, and WIRED has its own interest in a repository scoop.
Firm on what exists, thin on what it means
High confidence that the code and the prompt language are there, and that OpenAI is testing them. Much lower confidence on scope and timing: whether Persistent mode reaches the desktop app or ChatGPT Work rests on where a file sits, and no independent account exists to check the reading.
