Neurophos schedules a low-rate Austin production line two years before its chip ships
Neurophos has made Kymeta founder Nathan Kundtz its chief technology officer, opened a Sunnyvale office and scheduled a low-rate Austin production line for later this year, with the chip due in 2028 and no benchmarks published.

A low-rate initial production line exists to make the same part twice. Neurophos says the planned Austin facility would give it somewhere to establish repeatable assembly and testing before it pursues higher volumes [6]. For a part the company says ships in 2028 [3], standing that line up in 2026 leaves roughly two years of process data before anyone else's servers depend on it. The Sunnyvale office is about proximity to chip designers, suppliers and potential customers in Silicon Valley [8].
runtimewire describes Kundtz as someone who has already attempted to carry metamaterials from academic research into manufactured hardware [24]. He founded Kymeta, which used metamaterials in electronically steered satellite antennas, and served as its CTO, CEO and president [9]. He also founded Intellectual Ventures' Center for Metamaterials and most recently ran the synthetic-data platform Rendered.ai [10]. Michael Shebanow, now senior vice president of engineering, is credited on the company team page with a decade of GPU and CPU work at Nvidia followed by engineering leadership at AMD, Samsung and Cadence [12]. Preston Woo's title has grown from chief financial officer to chief financial and commercialization officer [22], and Kevin Keller joined as general counsel after legal roles at Wilson Sonsini, Micron, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta [23].
Bowen co-founded Neurophos with chief scientist Andrew Traverso, and Duke says the company was spun out of professor David Smith's lab, where Bowen completed his doctorate [11]. The argument is that conventional processors require more power, manufacturing capacity and supporting infrastructure as models and workloads grow [13], and Bowen has a design for shrinking optical computation onto silicon [14]. runtimewire's reading is that a challenger architecture also needs software, manufacturing partners, systems integration and customers willing to commit workloads before volume production begins [15].
Neurophos says its workforce grew fourfold during 2026 and is scheduled to double again by year-end [16]. That is eight times the starting figure [2]. It has not published the starting or the current headcount [17]. An April update described the workforce as having nearly tripled since the January financing, over a different time window [18].
Capital raised in January is paying for all of it. The $110M Series A was announced on January 22nd, led by Gates Frontier with M12 among the investors, and brought reported total funding to $118M [19]. Everything raised before it therefore comes to about $8M [1]. runtimewire puts the round at nearly eight months old [20] and the first product two years from its stated delivery date [21]. The one dateable event in between is the Austin production facility, promised for later in 2026 [2].
What to watch
